Wessington Springs, Jan. 31 — On July 30, 2016, teams of local families, friends, businesses, places of worship and residents will help save more lives from cancer at the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Jerauld and Sanborn counties. The event will take place from 5-10 p.m. at the Wessington Springs football field.
The Relay For Life movement unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and take action to finish the fight once and for all. Relay For Life events are community gatherings where teams and individuals camp out at a school, park or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path.
Teams raise funds in the months leading up to the event. Dollars raised enable the Society to help people facing the disease, educate people about how to reduce their risk for cancer or detect it early when it’s the easiest to treat, and fund groundbreaking cancer research.
The Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest fundraising event to fight every cancer in every community, with four million participants in 6,000 events worldwide in 2015.
Last year, the East River Hutterite Communities participated in fundraising for the Relay For Life of Jerauld and Sanborn counties and raised $12,000 total throughout the year. They have participated in fundraising for a number of years, and since 2006, they have donated $146,000 to the American Cancer Society’s Mission and Research.
It is thanks to the dedication of Relay teams like the East River Hutterite Communities that the Society can continue its mission and help save lives.
Community members can get involved in the event by forming a team or making a donation to the Relay For Life of Jearuld and Sanborn Counties.
