The Mount Vernon Area Historical Society has been formed to preserve the community’s history. The Society is determined to establish a permanent museum in Mount Vernon.
Currently there are historical items on display at the Senior Citizen’s building, but a permanent, larger home is needed. Items currently displayed include memorabilia from the town’s post office, the Mount Vernon News, and many other pictures. With a permanent display, plans are for a salute to veterans section, and a section for events happening now to record, such as memorabilia of Chad Greenway, who recently retired as linebacker for the Minnesota Vikings. As more people learn about the Society, the goal is for more items from the Mount Vernon area’s past to be placed in the museum.
Yearly dues to join the newly formed society are $15 per person and $25 for each couple, beginning Jan. 1, 2018. General donations are being accepted now to the Mount Vernon Historical Society.
Officers elected are Roberta Olsen, president; Bob Pollard, vice-president; Vicki Berg Linke, secretary; and Julie Earl, treasurer.
Anyone interested in joining the society can attend the next meeting on Oct. 29, at 2:30 p.m., at the Senior Citizen’s building in Mount Vernon, or contact one of the officers.
