Alpena hog barn destroyed by fire

An Alpena hog barn was a complete loss in a Sunday afternoon fire, to which five area fire departments responded.
None of the hogs inside the barn survived the fire, described as “fully engulfed” by the time firefighters from the nearby Alpena Department arrived. They were able to control the blaze and keep it from spreading to a connecting barn, which held 2,000 more hogs.
The barn was one of Heartland Pork’s located a mile north and a mile west of Alpena.
A 911 call was received reporting the fire about 5:15 p.m. The fire was put out by around 9 p.m.
Departments from Alpena, Woonsocket, Wessington Springs, Wolsey and Huron responded to the fire.

Blackhawks upset 11B powerhouse in last regular season game

Hawks enter playoffs SESD Champs and No. 3 in 11B

The Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central Blackhawks capped off the 2017 regular season with a dramatic 21-14 victory over the Winner Warriors on Friday night.
With the win the Blackhawks finish the regular season with a 7-1 overall record and are top seed in Region 3 and No. 3 seed overall in class 11B. The Blackhawks are also 2017 SESD Conference champions with a 5-0 record.

Hawks to host first round playoffs Thursday night

The Blackhawks are the top team in Region 3 and will host Mt. Vernon/Plankinton on Thursday, Oct. 19 in Wessington Springs at 7 p.m.
After the first round, the remaining eight teams in 11B are reseeded 1-8. Going into the playoffs the Blackhawks are the #3 team overall. With a win, the Blackhawks would also host a second round game on Thursday, Oct. 26 in Wessington Springs.
