The Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central Blackhawks began the 2018 season with a 14-0 victory over Wagner on Friday night.
For most of the night both defenses kept the other teams’ offense in check. Finally with 10:16 remaining in the fourth quarter the Blackhawks broke through with Seth Tebay running in a touchdown from four yards out. Noah Dickson kicked the extra point for a 7-0 Blackhawk lead.
The Blackhawks got the ball back from Wagner on a fumble recovery and proceeded to drive the ball inside the 20 yardline. As they faced the fourth down, the Blackhawks tried a field goal, but it was blocked.
On Wagner’s first play they ran a reverse pass for a touchdown. However, the Blackhawks caught a big break when offsetting penalties forced the down to be replayed. On the very next play, the Blackhawks caused another fumble during a strip sack and took over the ball inside the Wagner 20 yard line.
With 2:34 remaining in the game, Trey Ulmer ran in a one yard touchdown. Dickson added the extra point and the score was 14-0. Ulmer then intercepted a Wagner pass. Blackhawks gained a first down and then took a knee to secure the victory.
The Blackhawk offense outgained Wagner 204 yards to 127 yards and had 17 first downs compared to only five first downs for Wagner.
Trey Ulmer led the Blackhawk offense with 96 yards rushing on 22 carries and a touchdown. Seth Tebay had 32 yards on six carries and a touchdown. Rylie Stevens led the defense with eight tackles. Alex Wormstadt and Wesley Linke each had six tackles.
Next up the Blackhawks travel to Bridgewater this Friday for a 7 p.m. game vs. Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan.
