On April 4, about 197 students from nine schools in the surrounding area attended the 23rd Custer Battlefield Memorial Highway Academic Festival at the DWU campus in Mitchell.
The event is a combination of a team oral competition among the attending schools and individual scores from students in 18 subject areas.
Each school can enter two students in each academic area’s test. Points are awarded to schools with students placing first through sixth in the competition. Four students from each school may enter the Quiz Bowl portion of the competition. When students answer a question correctly, they receive points. The school with the most points at the end of the competition wins.
Scholarships to attend DWU will be awarded to sophomores or juniors taking junior- or senior-level tests. Students can earn a $1,000 award with a first-place win, $500 if they are second, and $250 if they place third, with ties sharing awards.
The overall rankings were as follows: White Lake, first; Mitchell Christian, second; Kimball, third; Mount Vernon, fourth; Plankinton, fifth; Corsica-Stickney, sixth; Ethan, seventh; Woonsocket, eighth; Sanborn Central, ninth. The Quiz Bowl winner was Mitchell Christian School.
