The Woonsocket Board of Education met in special session on October 31st, 2019, at 12:00 p.m. in the Boardroom of the Woonsocket School. The purpose of the special meeting was to hold a public hearing and approve a waiver regarding a state certification requirement for the current Librarian. The new requirement came to light during a recent State accreditation review and it states that all Librarians that work with school children must have a librarian endorsement. Sarah Lieber is working on this endorsement and will complete a praxis test this year to complete the process. She currently holds a masters degree in education. Members attending were: Jason White, Neal Hiemstra, and Lisa Snedeker. Todd Olinger and Jodi Doering were absent. Others attending were Superintendent Rod Weber and Chris Selland. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited, and the meeting was called to order at 12:15 p.m.
On a motion by Neal Hiemstra, seconded by Lisa Snedeker, the Board approved the meeting agenda as presented. Motion carried.
A public hearing was held addressing Librarian Sarah Lieber, who will complete the Librarian endorsement this year to become certified. Librarians have to now be certified with a Librarian endorsement due to a change of rules from the Department of Education. Ms. Lieber will be taking the praxis test this year to add to her current teacher certification, but a waiver must be approved for the 2019-2020 school year.
General discussion was held on the state accreditation review that went well with just two minor areas to address.
Motion was made by Lisa Snedeker, with a second by Neal Hiemstra, to approve the application for waiver pursuant to Administrative Rule 24:43:02:08 (Plan of Intent) to the South Dakota Department of Education. Motion carried.
There being no further business to come before the Board, the October 31st, 2019, special board meeting of the Woonsocket Board of Education was adjourned at 12:46 p.m. on a motion by Neal Hiemstra, with a second by Lisa Snedeker. Motion carried.
