Helen C. Matya, 99, of Mitchell, died Monday, Dec. 13, 2021, at Avera Brady Heath and Rehab. 

Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, Dec. 20, at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial at Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery. Visitation was Sunday, Dec. 19, at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service followed by a rosary.

Helen C. Matya, daughter of Frank and Marie (Korger) Gable, was born Dec. 7, 1922, in Shelby, Neb. She grew up in Shelby and received her education there, graduating from Shelby High School. After her schooling, Helen was employed at Swift & Co in the Creamery Department candling eggs.

Helen was united in marriage with Ted A. Matya on Sept. 24, 1946, in Shelby, Neb. Ted was employed with power plants. The couple made their home in Richland, Neb., and later in Columbus, Neb. In 1957, the couple moved to Pickstown. In 1969, they moved to The Dalles, Ore., and later moved to Sweet Home, Ore. In 1986, they made their home in Mitchell.

Helen enjoyed crossword puzzles, cross stitching, reading, playing cards and games, and watching sports. Helen truly enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins.

Helen was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Pickstown.

Helen is survived by her four daughters, Linda (Lynn) Hansen of Sioux Falls, Kathleen (Bill) Austerman of Artesian, Colleen (Ken) Duncan of Oro Valley, Ariz., and Deborah Matya of Portland, Ore.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Evelyn Morgan of Kimball, Neb., Irene Smith of Columbus, Neb., and Betty Watts of Papillion, Neb.; a sister-in-law, Luella Gable of Shelby, Neb.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Matya; her parents; and her siblings, Agnes, Norma Jean, Edward and Donald.

Norman Maeschen, 89, of Ethan, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2021, at Corsica Good Samaritan Society in Corsica. 

Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, Dec. 16, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation was Wednesday, at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a scripture service. Arrangements by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Norman Maeschen was born Jan. 14, 1932, to William and Mary (Loos) Maeschen in rural Ethan. He attended rural schools in Davison County and farmed with his family until he entered the U.S. Army on Feb. 10, 1953. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 22, 1954. After returning from the Army, Norman began farming in 1955, and received his GED in 1958.

On April 19, 1960, Norman married Bonnie VanGorp in Aurora Center.

Norman served on the Ethan School Board and was the chairman for 14 years. He served on the Tobin Township Board for 44 years as a supervisor, and on the South Dakota Association of Towns and Townships as Director of Davison County. He was a dedicated member of the Moose Lodge, holding many elected positions. Norman was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell.  

Norman loved spending time with family, friends, and his dog, Sasha.

Norman is survived by his wife, Bonnie; five children, Scott (Janet) Maeschen of Letcher, Dawn (Larry) Johnsen, Kent Maeschen, Robert (Krissy) Maeschen, and Denise (Johnny) Monsees; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and sister, LaVonne Hohn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary; brothers, Gerald and Gary; sister, Anita Neugebauer; father and mother-in-law, Neal and Cecelia VanGorp; and one brother-in-law.

Shirley Maxine Starr, 71, of Lane, passed away Sunday, Dec. 12, 2021, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls of cancer.

Funeral Services were held Friday, Dec. 17, at the Basham Funeral Chapel in Wessington Springs.  Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery.  Visitation was Thursday at the funeral home with a prayer service.

Shirley was born on July 4, 1950, to Lee and Maxine (Bunde) Miller at their family farmhouse south of Lane.  She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended Lane school.

She married Jim Starr in February 2002. Most of Shirley’s working career was spent at Van Dykes in Woonsocket. She retired in 2012.

She enjoyed spending time with family, and her favorite time spent with them was the Fourth of July.

Shirley is survived by her two sons, Eric Miller of Brookings and Blake (Angie) Miller of Mt. Vernon; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Cindy (Craig) Schuman of Black Hawk; one niece, one nephew and three great-nieces and -nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Terry Miller; and husband, Jim.
