On Saturday, Nov. 13, the annual Sanborn County Cancer Society benefit basketball tournament was held at Woonsocket. Girls’ and boys’ fifth and sixth grade teams from Mt. Vernon/Plankinton (MVP), Ethan, Wessington Springs and Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (SCW) participated in a full day of basketball games. There were also door prizes and concessions for participants and spectators throughout the day.

In the third and fourth place game, the Blackhawk girls played tough to pull ahead of the MVP Titans in the fourth quarter to secure third place in the tournament. In the championship game, Wessington Springs defeated Ethan to earn the first-place trophy.
The boys’ teams wrapped up the day with their afternoon games. SCW defeated Wessington Springs to qualify for the championship game. In the second matchup, MVP lost to a solid Ethan team. In the third/fourth place game, Wessington Springs and MVP were well matched, but MVP pulled ahead and defeated Wessington Springs to win the third-place trophy. In the championship game, the Blackhawk boys played hard but were overpowered by the Rustlers and claimed second place in the tournament. The Ethan boys fifth/sixth grade basketball team won first-place in this year’s Sanborn County Cancer Society Tournament.
