On Saturday, April 2, Ken and Lila Stach had started a controlled burn to burn off 20 acres of slough located southwest of the old Letcher school building. According to Ken Stach, there must have been a stump in the burned area that was still glowing, and when the wind came up on Sunday, it blew sparks from the stump across the railroad tracks to the east. Those sparks started a big bean field on fire on the east side of the tracks and things got out of hand from there.
