February 2023

Last week was cold, blustery and full of snow with Winter Storm Olive putting things to a halt all over South Dakota on Wednesday and Thursday. The snow started Tuesday and continued through Wednesday. The wind picked up and made for difficult driving conditions all day Wednesday and part of Thursday. Schools were closed or practicing E-learning to keep from making up so many days. Thursday afternoon was spent cleaning out driveways, roads, walkways and parking lots, so life could get back to normal on Friday. To give townships and families extra time to clear roads and driveways, Sanborn Central continued with E-learning on Friday, but the last basketball game of the regular season was able to take place that night, so normalcy was found quickly.

Mason Moody of rural Letcher had another good weekend with his second first-place ride on the Velocity Tour on Saturday, Feb. 18 in Memphis, Tenn. That ride earned him $7,366 and his winning score of a 91 put him in the 90-point club now, which also puts him at another level in the bull riding world. He is now sitting in second place in the Velocity Tour standings.

Because of his success on the Velocity Tour, he was recently called up to compete in the Unleash the Beast Tour, which is another level up in the professional bull riding circuit. He is excited to take on this higher level of competition and hopes to score enough points to get into the top 35 riders, which will open more doors for him and allow him to compete in some rodeos that only allow the top 35-40 to ride.

The Woonsocket Community and Events Center was full of laughter and fun on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon as the community players group presented the play “Antibiotic” to over 150 people between the two performances. This year’s play had more of an adult theme, but the crazy antics displayed by the whole cast entertained everyone in attendance.
