In their first week of regular play, the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks volleyball teams faced Hanson and Ethan in away gyms. On Tuesday, Aug. 29, they were in Alexandria and whooped the Hanson Beavers in three sets. However, on Thursday, Aug. 31, they traveled to Ethan, and the tables reversed with the Blackhawks losing to the Rustlers in three sets.

Set scores were 26-24, 25-22 and 25-22 with SCW serving 90.8 percent as a team. The C team and junior varsity both lost their games against the Beavers.

As a team, the Blackhawks improved to a 96.9 serving percentage, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Ethan’s determination in three sets with scores of 12-25, 7-25 and 11-25. The C-team suffered their second loss for the season, but the JV won their game against Ethan and improved to a 1-1 record.

The Blackhawks hosted their first home game of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 5 against Corsica-Stickney in Woonsocket. They faced Parkston on Thursday, Sept. 7 in Forestburg. They have a tournament in Wolsey on Saturday, Sept. 9, and then have a game in Wessington Springs on Tuesday, Sept. 12.

The heavy State Fair and Labor Day weekend traffic was bound to cause a few dangerous situations at a junction that already sees a large number of vehicles on a daily basis, so it is no surprise that a four-vehicle accident at the east junction of SD Highways 34 and 37 dampened a few people’s holiday weekend plans on Sunday morning.

According to preliminary reports, at around 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 3, a pickup pulling a camper was headed east on SD Highway 34 and was approaching the junction. A truck was coming from the south on SD Highway 37 and also approaching the junction. The truck didn’t make a complete stop at the white line before the stop sign, which gave the impression that it wasn’t going to make a complete stop at all, so the pickup hauling the camper swerved to avoid getting hit and swerved into two vehicles that were in the turning lane waiting to turn south. Technically, it was a three-vehicle accident, and the fourth vehicle was the truck that didn’t actually get hit or hit anything but was involved in the accident.

Jessica Anderson, Woonsocket School’s Food Service Director, has been working hard to get the word out about the Farm to School food program that is being utilized in the Woonsocket Lakefront Cafeteria at the school this year. Fortunately, her diligence has started to pay off as the school has received several donations since the school year started.

To start, Scott and Crystal Lammey donated a steer to be butchered, processed and delivered to the school to start the school year off with healthy, homegrown beef for their lunches. Then, Josh Larson and his eldest daughter, Cheyann, delivered 10 watermelons to be cut up and distributed to the students or offered on their salad bar. To follow, Charley Larson took in two large bags full of cucumbers to be sliced up and served on the salad bar. The next week, Josh Larson delivered more watermelons and added several muskmelons so the students could all enjoy some more delicious, locally raised produce. Joyce and Dick Zell have also been kind enough to donate fresh vegetables from their garden for the cooks to use and the students and staff to enjoy for lunch.
