February 2024

On Saturday, Jan. 27, Kamryn Ochsner held a Little Hawks Basketball Camp for grades kindergarten through six in the Woonsocket gym. Ochsner conducted the camp to fulfill her senior project requirement, and she commented that she chose to do this for her project to teach young kids the basics of basketball and hopefully help them to gain enough knowledge about the sport to enjoy playing someday.

The camp itinerary consisted of drills for ball handling, shooting and passing. After going through the basic drills, they chose teams to do some scrimmaging. They also played some basketball games to add some fun to the day. When asked what she learned from the experience, Ochsner stated, “This was a very good learning experience for me. I learned that I had to be a good communicator with the girls and explain everything really well so they understood the drill and what they were doing.”

The camp was supposed to take place earlier in the month, but it had to be rescheduled due to the weather. Ochsner reported that the rescheduling didn’t really affect the turnout. There were only a few girls who couldn’t make the rescheduled date, so she still ended up with 48 participants, and she was very pleased with the turnout.

The kindergarten through second grade girls met from 9 to 10:15 that morning, and the third through sixth graders met from 10:30 to 12:30. The camp registration included a free T-shirt and smoothie for each of the participants who joined Ochsner and her helpers, her twin sister, Kenna Ochsner and their fellow teammate, Liz Boschee, for a fun Saturday activity to fight the winter blues. Ochsner commented, “I was very pleased with the way everything turned out. I had a lot of fun with the girls, and they had a lot of fun, too.”

Funeral services were on Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Forestburg 4-H Building in Forestburg. Burial was in Silver Creek Cemetery in rural Forestburg. Visitation was Friday with a prayer service at Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Brean Christa Olson was born on Feb. 15, 1986, to Gary and Karla (Pontow) Olson in Mitchell. Brean attended Mitchell High School, graduating in 2004. Brean loved sports and participated in varsity athletics for the Mitchell Kernels. She received a golf scholarship from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. She was a gifted golfer, and she enjoyed playing the game and loved teaching the game to others. Brean would later graduate from Southeast Technical Institute and Southern New Hampshire University.

Brean was always so loving, kind, and filled with positivity. She had a genuine kindness to her, and all admired her for being herself, accepting of everyone, and living her life to the fullest. Brean was a beautiful soul with an infectious spirit and radiating smile, and always gave the best hugs. She always gave more than she received and always found the good in people, regardless of their situation. Brean also loved being an aunt to her nephew, Duncan.

Brean is survived by her parents, Gary and Karla Olson; sister, Jenna (Jason) McDonald; brother, Chase Olson; one nephew; and several other aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Art and Eunice Olson, Ralph Pontow, Gordon and Elda Keeton; and uncle, James Grassel.

On Tuesday, Jan. 23, both the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams traveled to Alexandria to take on the Hanson Beavers. The SCW ladies had their work cut out for them, as the Hanson girls’ teams have a strong program under the guidance of Coach Jim Bridge again this year. The boys faced a fearsome opponent in the Beaver boys’ team, as well, but they persevered and came out victors in the end.

The evening started with the junior varsity Lady Blackhawks losing 19-39 to the younger Hanson girls.

The junior varsity boys were up next, and the Blackhawks came out on top with a 41-32 win over the Beavers.

The varsity girls fought a good battle but ended their game in a 34-53 loss to the varsity Hanson ladies. It was obvious the Hanson ladies were coached well in preparation for the game, as their defense didn’t allow Liz Boschee to score a single point.

The varsity boys finished the night, and they brought home a wonderful victory, outscoring the Hanson Beavers 55-49.

On Thursday, Jan. 25, the SCW Lady Blackhawks hosted the Wessington Springs Spartan ladies in Woonsocket. The SCW junior varsity girls ended a low-scoring struggle with a 15-27 loss.

In what was considered a 281-Conference rematch, the SCW varsity ladies ended the night with a difficult 41-51 loss.

On Saturday, Jan. 27, the varsity Blackhawk boys competed in the Blizzard Buster Classic in Irene. With the score tied at 31 at halftime and only a two-point difference at the end of three quarters, it was a fight to the finish with the Blackhawks defeating the Freeman Flyers, 63-54.

The Lady Blackhawks move to 8-6 on the year, and the boys improve to 7-6 for the season. Their next court action was on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at a doubleheader in Ethan against the Rustlers. They then play Wolsey-Wessington on Saturday, Feb. 3 in Wolsey, start time is 12 noon. Their first game of the following week is scheduled as a doubleheader on Tuesday, Feb. 6 versus Parkston at Sanborn Central.
