SCW Blackhawk golfers find the fairway

On Wednesday, April 24, the junior high and junior varsity Blackhawk golfers traveled to Wessington Springs for their first meet of the season. With 10 young ladies competing in the junior high girls’ division, SCW’s Alli Westendorf earned fourth place, and Skylar Kluth finished in seventh.

There were 39 junior high boys playing in their division, and Cort Stevens brought home sixth place for the Blackhawks, while Rylan Eggleston earned eighth place. No other Blackhawks placed in the top 10 for junior high boys.

The JV girls had eight golfers competing in their division. Jalyn Grassel finished in second place out of the eight, and Miley Adams earned third place for the SCW Blackhawks.

A group of 30 boys competed in the junior varsity event, and the SCW boys performed well, earning seven of the top 10 places. Shiloh Senska came home with first place, while Sam Baruth captured third and Camden Rassel earned fourth. Evan Easton came in at seventh place, and Cole Wilson accomplished eighth place. Rylan Grassel and Parker Ettswold finished in ninth and tenth places, respectively.

It was the varsity team’s turn on Thursday, April 25, as they competed in a tournament at Wessington Springs, as well. With 17 girls competing, SCW placed two in the top 10. Jalyn Grassel finished in ninth place, and Tatiana Roberts came in 10th.

On the boys’ side of the meet, the highest finish for the Blackhawks came from Ethan Schmiedt earning 15th out of 34 boys.

According to Head Coach Armondo Rodriguez, “The season has started off slow due to the weather. The kids are really improving. We have only been to two varsity meets and one JH/JV meet. It has been a fun start to the season, and the kids are excited for some better weather to get out on the course.”

The next meet for the varsity is today (Thursday) at DeSmet, starting at 10 a.m., and the JH/JV will be in Miller on the same day. The 281 Conference meet for varsity/JV/JH had to be rescheduled to Friday, May 3, starting at 10 a.m. in Wessington Springs. The varsity then go to Huron for a James Valley Christian invite on Tuesday, May 7. If the weather doesn’t cause more problems, results will be in next week’s issue.

First responders prepare for electrical hazards

Mitchell – Emergency responders are usually the first to arrive on the scene of an accident or fire, so they face a greater risk of encountering electrical hazards such as damaged equipment or downed power lines.

In an effort to protect and educate area first responders, Central Electric Cooperative offered free electrical safety training at their headquarters west of Mitchell on April 24. Attendees included firefighters and emergency medical technicians (EMTs). The annual training event helps improve safety and bridge the gap between first responders and electric cooperative personnel.

During the training, Central Electric’s Manager of Operations Brian Bultje showed common examples of electrical meters and provided guidance on protocols for disconnecting power during an emergency.

“One key point to remember is that emergency personnel should try to notify the electric utility as soon as possible,” Bultje said. “When there’s a structure fire, power will typically need to be disconnected, and we don’t have the luxury of driving with lights and sirens.”

Bultje added, “Pulling the meter does not guarantee the power is off. Take that extra step and call us so we can dispatch crews and keep everyone safe.”

Electrician Rodney Weber answered questions about fires involving solar panels, and independent instructor Brian Baldwin guided participants through a hands-on bucket truck rescue. The training ended with a high-voltage safety demonstration led by Line Superintendent Dusty Roskens to show the damage electricity can cause.

Participating organizations included the Woonsocket T&C Fire District, Fedora Volunteer Fire Department, Canova Volunteer Fire Department, Carthage Ambulance, Chamberlain/Oacoma Fire Department, Crow Creek Sioux Ambulance, Grass Ranch Colony Fire Department, Kimball Fire Department and Ambulance Service, Mitchell Fire Department, Plankinton Volunteer Fire Department, Rosedale Colony Fire Department, Spencer Volunteer Fire Department, Stickney Volunteer Fire Department, and White Lake Ambulance.

By the end of the three-hour training, attendees gained insight and knowledge to keep themselves and others safe during emergencies.

Shooting Sports records solid year

Sanborn County 4-H Shooting Sports recorded a solid year in 2024, with 14 new shooters, numerous county records set, and 52 shooters qualifying for the State Shoot in 123 events.

The Shooting Sports program offers multiple disciplines in guns and archery. The gun disciplines include BB Gun (BB), Air Pistol (AP), Air Rifle (AR), .22 CMP Rifle (22CMP), .22 3-Position Rifle (22-3P), .22 Pistol (22P). Archery disciplines include Compound Bow Without Sights (CWOS), Compound Without Sights with Release (CWOS-R), Compound With Sights (CWS), Compound With Sights with Release (CWS-R), Recurve Bow With Sights (RWS), Recurve Without Sights (RWOS), and Compound Open (C-Open).

In many of the disciplines there are different requirements, positions and/or shooting distances depending on the age level.

Also participating in Shooting Sports this year were Hudson Cope, Henry Hunter, Elsie and Amelia Klaas, Myles Larson, Kolby Lindsey, and Makenna and Jackson Wolter.

County Shoot placings are decided over the county match shoots from January through April. The top scores from the match shoots are used to determine the first, second and third place finishes for the county level. State Shoot was held April 26-28 in Ft. Pierre/Pierre.
