In light of some unique circumstances with no female member of the senior class at Sanborn Central, the “powers that be” had to come up with a little different approach to naming Homecoming Royalty at their school this year. So, they decided to have a Mr. Blackhawk contest. There was a student-body vote, a swimsuit competition, and a watermelon eating contest, all to earn points toward a top winner, and Bryce Larson was crowned their Mr. Blackhawk to represent their school this week.

With 26 students in Woonsocket’s senior class, this year’s coronation in Woonsocket was filled with introductions, pep band, cheers and an outstanding junior skit, all leading up to the announcement of this year’s Knight and Princess. The two honored with the titles for this year’s Homecoming festivities are Knight Rylan Grassel and Princess Makenzie Schley.

Grant Edwards takes off with one of his three interceptions in the Blackhawks’ game against Lead-Deadwood in Wessington Springs last week.

Last Friday night, the WWSSC Blackhawks hosted the Lead-Deadwood Golddiggers in Wessington Springs and sent the Golddiggers searching to strike elsewhere as the Blackhawks earned their second win of the season with a 42-6 victory.

Regarding last Friday’s game, Head Coach Michael Schmitz stated, “The Blackhawks took another good step forward. We did some really good things on offense to continue to move the ball. The team is really coming together and playing with a lot of fun. The defense started to play faster with more confidence.”

The Blackhawks have a bye this week, and then they play Webster in Wessington Springs on Friday, Sept. 13 for Homecoming. The game starts at 7 p.m.

The Little Red School House Award was presented to the Woonsocket Elementary School for implementing the most significant, innovative and successful education program or project by the School Administrators of South Dakota (SASD).  The Woonsocket Elementary School set a goal to increase achievement scores in reading for the 2023-24 school year. The idea was to create a reading intervention program called Flight School. Woonsocket started the year with an assessment tool called FastBridge to evaluate all their K-6 students. After the assessment, Woonsocket used the data to determine which students needed to receive extra reading instruction. An intervention program was created where every start of the morning for 30 minutes, 40 plus students with the largest “gap” would go into small groups. In the small groups, students would receive instruction on the specific skill that they struggled with.  The on-level students attended Walking Club which gave them the opportunity to exercise for 15 minutes and to help the younger students with the remaining 15 minutes. The teachers and staff at Woonsocket are committed to these 30-minute sessions to help the students improve. The flight school has been so successful that they have shared this with other school districts.  Woonsocket believes that intervention programs like this one will bring more success to students, not only in reading, but across the board.
