On Tuesday, Jan. 9, the SCW Blackhawks basketball teams traveled to Kimball for a doubleheader against the Kimball/White Lake (KWL) WiLdKats. The varsity ladies took control once again and improved their record to 6-2 on the season, while the varsity boys gave the crowd another nail biter that did not end in the Blackhawks’ favor.
The games started with the girls’ junior varsity handling things quite easily against the younger KWL ladies with a final score of 31-15, SCW.
The JV boys played next and added another victory to their undefeated record with a 30-23 score over the younger WiLdKats.
The varsity girls were up next. The Lady Blackhawks started slow, but then took off in the second quarter and never looked back in the 58-27 win over the WiLdKats.
The varsity boys ended the night with another close game that came down to the last seconds. The Blackhawks worked hard to the end but couldn’t come out on top and finished with their fifth loss for the season with a final score of 45-47, KWL.
Of the five losses for the Blackhawks this season so far, three of them have been within three points and another within six. What they are doing is working, it just comes down to finishing. There is a lot of season left, so things should continue to improve. The 281 Conference Tournament started for the girls on Friday, Jan. 12, and the Lady Blackhawks brought home a 50-35 win over Wolsey-Wessington to advance to the semi-finals. Their second-round game was on Tuesday against Iroquois/Lake Preston. The boys’ games got postponed from Saturday to Monday, where SCW played Hitchcock-Tulare in their first round and broke their losing streak, defeating the Patriots, 64-39.
