On Thursday, Nov. 21, the Sanborn Central gym was full of representatives from businesses and colleges who had been invited there to speak to high school students about what their company or university has to offer for their future. They were asked to attend the college/career fair by Sanborn Central senior Bryce Larson, who organized the event as his senior project requirement.

To start, Larson invited around 30-35 entities to attend, and 20 confirmed and setup at the actual event. In choosing who to ask for the event, Larson wanted to have a wide variety of options to try to reach everyone’s interests. “I didn’t want the fair to just be another career fair. I know that a lot of kids have been to a career fair before and have seen a lot of businesses before, so I wanted to have some businesses that I had hoped had never been to a career fair. I wanted to have a wide variety of different industries at the fair, so I thought of and contacted people from many different career paths. I contacted people that I had previously seen at career fairs myself and then thought of more I have never seen and thought kids would be interested in.”

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), there are more cases of Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, in the United States now than there were at this time last year. Their website states that “Whooping cough is an endemic (common) disease in the United States; however, reports of pertussis cases were lower than usual over the past few years, during and following the COVID-19 pandemic, which is probably due to mitigation measures used during the pandemic (e.g., masking, remote learning). Now, the United States is beginning to return to pre-pandemic patterns where more than 10,000 cases are typically reported each year.”

Recently, both Sanborn Central and Woonsocket Schools reported in their daily announcements that the schools had been contacted by the Horizon Health Clinic of Woonsocket with information about Pertussis due to the rise in cases in South Dakota. In a short interview with local provider, Katlyn Rostyne, CNP for the clinic in Woonsocket, she reported that the clinic contacted the schools because there was an unconfirmed case detected in Sanborn County, but there has also been an outbreak in Hartford and at South Dakota State University in Brookings, so they thought it would be best to get information out to the communities. “With many of Sanborn County’s young people going to school at SDSU, it was the responsible thing to do to get people informed, and with the unconfirmed case in our area, we needed the schools to be aware and take action, as well.”

Carl Olson

Mitchell

Carl Olson, 69, of Mitchell, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024, at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Nov. 19, at First United Methodist Church in Mitchell. Burial was at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation was Monday at Bittner Funeral Chapel, with a prayer service.

Carl Alfred Olson was born on July 27, 1955, to Clyde and Esther (Weber) Olson in Mitchell. He attended school at Plano and graduated from Artesian High School in 1973. In 1958, when Carl was three years old, he made his first visit to Mayo Clinic. At the age of 14, he was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes. Carl received three kidneys and a pancreas.

Carl worked at 3M in Mitchell until a torn retina in his left eye left him blind in that eye. His kidneys were also failing, and he was put on dialysis and the transplant list. In 1979, he purchased an acreage east of Mitchell and called it home for 45 years. He loved working on the acreage and was particular about his fence. Even with little eyesight, he mowed weeds, pushed snow and enjoyed wildlife down by the creek. Carl always had an interest in cars, trucks motorcycles, and snowmobiles. He liked to tinker and work with his hands. Carl was very proud to talk about his skydiving experience in California and his Alaskan Cruise.

Carl is survived by his siblings, Jeanie (Eugene) Wohl of Lodi, Calif., and Mary (Larry) Crane and Robert Olson, both of Mitchell.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents and nephew, Adam Crane.
