Sanborn County was represented well at this year’s National 4-H Shoot in Grand Island, Neb., with two national team members: 22 (Small Bore) Pistol – Alex Schelske and 22 Rifle – Dilyn Brooks. In addition, Sanborn County Shooting Sports Instructor Art Kneen was chosen to coach the National Air Pistol Team. Sanborn County Shooting Sports Instructor Audrey Kneen attended to assist each of the teams with equipment and supplies, and parents were also in attendance.
The group arrived in Grand Island on Sunday, June 19, and spent Monday with practice during the day and Opening Ceremonies that night. Competition began on Tuesday.
Overall in smallbore pistol, Alex found his dedicated practice and preparation to have paid off as he finished with a strong placing of 13 of 57 competitors, helping his SD team to place sixth of the 14 teams.
Overall, Dilyn recorded an individual placing of 23 of the 79 competitors, and the SD team placed sixth of the total 20 teams.
Award ceremonies were held each day following a competition and the final ceremony included the Sweepstakes awards determined by total points earned by every discipline for each state. South Dakota had nine teams which included 22 Smallbore Pistol, 22 Smallbore Rifle, Air Pistol, Air Rifle, Compound Archery, Recurve Archery, Shotgun, Muzzle Loading and Hunting Skills and took a fifth-place finish in the Sweepstakes.
