SIOUX FALLS — The South Dakota State women’s basketball team was voted No. 1 in the Summit League preseason poll released by the conference office on Tuesday, Oct. 11, with sixth-year senior Myah Selland selected as the conference’s preseason player of the year for the second straight season.
The Jackrabbits collected 36 of the 40 possible first-place votes and totaled 746 points in the poll. South Dakota was picked to finish second with 676 total points and four first-place votes. SDSU and USD shared the regular season title in 2021-22 with matching 17-1 conference marks. The Jacks are coming off a 29-9 season that concluded with a WNIT championship victory at Frost Arena, while USD was 29-6 last season and made the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time after winning the Summit League tournament title. Oral Roberts, who is under the direction of first-year head coach Kelsi Musick, rounded out the top three in the poll with 602 points.
Selland, a 2017 Sanborn Central graduate and the daughter of Brett and Kelly Selland of Letcher, averaged 14.2 points to lead the team a season ago and added 4.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists on average, which ranked second. She led the Summit League with a 2.1 assist/turnover ratio and shot 51.1 percent from the field and 46.6 percent from the 3-point line. The 2022 WNIT MVP put up double figures in 22 contests last season. Selland was an all-Summit League first team pick in 2021-22.
South Dakota State women open the season with Creighton at 7 p.m. on Nov. 7 at Frost Arena. USD opens the season on Nov. 7 against Midland in Vermillion.
