Sanborn Central bus hit by car at three-mile corner

A Sanborn Central School bus carrying football players was hit by a car at the three-mile corner intersection Monday afternoon about 3:45 p.m.
The bus, driven by Corey Flatten, 30-year old coach and social studies teacher at Sanborn Central, was driving the bus westbound on Highway 34. The players and their coach were on their way to an end-of-season football meeting in Woonsocket.
Fifty-eight-year-old Kimberly Rettig of Mitchell, driving a 2013 Nissan Altima was approaching the intersection from the north on Highway 37. She reportedly stopped at the stop sign and then pulled out in front of the bus.
Rettig was not wearing a seatbelt and suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Avera Queen of Peace Hospital by ambulance. Her passenger, 77-year-old Charlotte Heida suffered minor injuries and transported herself to the hospital.
Heida and Flatten were wearing their seatbelts. None of the students on the bus were injured.
The Sanborn County Sheriff’s office and Sanborn County Ambulance, SD Dept. of Game, Fish and Parks and the SD Highway Patrol responded to the accident.
