The Woonsocket American Legion Post 29, along with the Legion Auxiliary, is committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service members and veterans.
With the recent celebration of Veterans Day, we wanted to take the time to highlight some of the activities and services that your local post offers. Each year on Veterans Day, your post members prepare and serve a soup/sandwich meal for veterans and families, as well as our special guests, the school teachers and staff. We are honored to participate in the annual Veterans Day program at Woonsocket School. A special opportunity each year is visiting the sixth grade class to teach the students proper flag etiquette and flag folding.
Each summer, we sponsor and send youth to attend Boys State and Girls State, leadership and citizenship programs where youth engage in a number of political activities. We also support the local Boy Scout group.
We are proud to provide military funeral honors for our fallen comrades, and to provide Color Guard for parades and other events.
If you are looking for a US Flag or SD flag to display, you need go no further than your local Legion post, as we offer various sizes of all weather flags for sale. When it comes time for a flag to be retired because it is worn and tattered, just give it to a Legion member for proper disposal with a Flag Burning Ceremony.
The Legion Auxiliary annually distributes poppies with a goal to make people aware of the sacrifices of our veterans. Donations from the distribution of poppies benefit veteran programs.
To help fund Legion activities, we host BINGO every second and fourth Wednesday night at the Woonsocket Community Center at 7:30 p.m.
There is regular BINGO payout, as well as a building blackout BINGO payout, and a snack is served. Numbers have been declining for the BINGO, and we are considering whether to continue this event. We encourage you to come out for a night of fun and to support Legion BINGO.
Your Legion post has received multiple donations of home healthcare equipment over the years that we loan out at no charge. The equipment includes wheelchairs, walkers, a hospital bed, shower chairs, raised toilet seats, a lift chair and more. Contact a Legion member if you need to borrow equipment. Donations for use of the equipment are gratefully received.
As we look ahead to 2017, time flies, and it won’t be long before it’s time to celebrate Memorial Day. Each year we present a Memorial Day program. The weekend also includes honoring each of our veterans with a special flag at their grave site. Please alert us if there is a grave we have missed. We look forward to seeing you at our program on Monday, May 29, 2017!
