Audrey Oberg

Howard

Audrey Nicole Oberg, 15, passed away on Oct. 14, 2024, at her home in Howard.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Beach United Methodist Church in Howard. The committal service was at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Artesian. Visitation was Friday, Oct. 18, at the Howard Beach United Methodist Church.

Audrey was born on Dec. 31, 2008, in Mitchell, to Tony and Caroline (Swanson) Oberg. Audrey was outgoing and loved learning new things. She was always challenging herself with her next new project, from learning new languages to playing the ukulele, keyboard and guitar. Audrey was proud of her art, had awards for her academic achievements and was a member of the student council.

Audrey is survived by her father, Tony; mother, Caroline; sister, Kaitlyn; brother, Adrian; grandma, Jo Oberg; grandparents, Terry and Duane Swanson; two aunts and many cousins. 

She was preceded in death by several great-grandparents and her grandpa, Shane Oberg.

Devona Nolz

Mitchell

Devona Nolz, 89, of Mitchell, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2024, at Avera Brady Health & Rehab in Mitchell. 

Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, October 18, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation was Thursday at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a prayer service.

Devona Katherine Nolz was born on May 18, 1935, to Nicholas and Leona (Thelen) Weber at Parkston.  She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Parkston and graduated from high school in 1953.

On Nov. 17, 1956, she married Alvin Nolz of Delmont. They farmed near Delmont for four years and then moved to a farm southwest of Mount Vernon, where they lived for nine years. In 1970, they purchased a farm northeast of Mitchell and lived there until they moved into Mitchell in 1990.

Devona was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and Altar Society. She was a Catholic Aid member of Saint Mary of Parkston for over 50 years and a member of the Friday Lunch Bunch.  In her spare time, Devona enjoyed traveling on bus tours, polka dancing, playing cards, gardening and reading.

Devona is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Daniel) Park of Sioux Falls; sons, David (Peggy) Nolz of Mitchell and Dennis (Kelli) Nolz of Garretson; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Sally (Alfred) Hohn; and sisters-in-law, Esther Weber, Regina Nolz, and Mary Ellen Weber.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin; her parents; and 11 siblings.

The SCW junior varsity Lady Blackhawks had another great week with two more wins under their belt. They started with a two-set win over the Sharks from Iroquois/Lake Preston. Set scores were 25-18 and 25-10. 

On Thursday, the junior varsity ladies were in Kimball to take on the KWL WiLdKats. They ended that match with another two-set win and scores of 25-20 and 25-14.

The SCW junior varsity Lady Blackhawks are on a 12-game winning streak with their only loss for the season being against Hanson, their first game of the year. They played Hitchcock-Tulare on Tuesday, Oct. 22 in Woonsocket, and they play Bridgewater-Emery in Forestburg on Friday, Oct. 25. They play a make-up game with Howard on Monday, Oct. 28. They have their last game of the season on Tuesday, Oct. 29, in Mt. Vernon. All their games can be watched remotely.
