Mayor Mark Chada called the meeting to order with Sean Gromer, Angie Larson and Angie Meier in attendance. 

A motion was made by Gromer, seconded by Larson, carried, to approve the April 8th, 2024, minutes as read.

Old Business:

Update on the ballfield: Chada contacted Pro-Contracting, and they will be coming up in the next week to lay cement in the dugouts. Update: Pro-Contracting has laid the cement in the dugouts. Chada contacted Tanner Cross about getting prices for posts and installing the posts as he did the backstops in Mount Vernon and Salem. The Board is waiting to hear back from Cross. Update: Cross has delivered the posts for the backstop. The Board is waiting to hear back from him on the price of setting the poles. Discussion was also held on the lights at the ballpark. Morris Electric has ordered the lights. Update: Lights will be installed once Morris Electric receives them. Update: Discussion was held on the ballpark backstop. The Board is going to have Tanner Cross install the poles, and Melissa Ettswold will be ordering the pad and net this next week. The team is also planning to have workdays coming up in the next couple of weeks as they have their first game on May 20th. Update on the ballpark: The Board is waiting on Morris Electric to install the lights, Cross has come and set the poles, hung gates, and stretched the fence. Once the pad and the net are hung, he will come back and cut off the tops of the poles and cap them. Chada and the baseball parent volunteers have been working on the backstop and the dugouts. 

Discussion was held on summer help. Chada, Larson, and Gromer had interviews on Monday at the community center. After the interviews, they discussed hiring; a motion was made by Larson, seconded by Gromer, to hire Payton Uecker at $16.00 per hour for the summer help. 

The Dumpster Days will start on Wednesday, April 24th, and will be picked up on Monday, April 29th. Update: Dumpsters were delivered on the 24th. 

New Business:

Discussion was held on talking to Dawson Construction about bringing a couple of loads of gravel for Main Street. Meier will talk to Dawson to get a cost and when they would be able to deliver the gravel and spread it out.

Lloyd Hendrix

Artesian

Lloyd Hendrix, 94, of Artesian, died Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Prairie View Healthcare Center in Woonsocket. Visitation was Thursday, May 2, in the Bittner Funeral Chapel Community Room, with a prayer service. Burial was Friday, May 3, at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Artesian.

Lloyd Duane Hendrix was born Oct. 9, 1929, to Ralph and Gertrude (Bluhm) Hendrix in rural Artesian on the family farm. Lloyd attended high school in Mitchell.

Lloyd was united in marriage to Eleanor Kneen on July 28, 1950. To this union, sons Terry and Joel were born. After Eleanor’s passing, Lloyd later married Carol Earls on Dec. 8, 1993.

For two years, Lloyd worked with his brother, Lyle, at Lyle’s repair shop in Carthage, and then actively farmed and ran a custom hay moving business near Artesian until he retired.

Lloyd was a horse enthusiast. His love for horses began at a young age when he’d ride a horse to country school. His love for horses continued throughout his life training horses and attending horse shows. 

Lloyd was a long-time member of the Moose Lodge, Artesian Township Board, and assisted with the 4-H horse program. He also loved driving semi-truck coast to coast with his son, Joel, and helping his son, Terry at the Artesian Veterinary Clinic with building livestock equipment and using his horse, Larchwood, to help round up cattle with Terry at the farm and for clinic clients.

Lloyd is survived by his wife, Carol; son, Terry (Jan) Hendrix of Custer; stepsons, Richard Estabrook of Woonsocket, Terry Estabrook of Montevideo, Minn., and Steve Estabrook of Kuwait; nine step grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eleanor; son, Joel Hendrix; stepson, Bruce Estabrook; two brothers, Lyle and Robert (Bob); one sister, Frances Knust; two nephews, Dave and Jack Knust; and one niece, Carla Knust.

On Wednesday, May 1, the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket junior high track team traveled to Wessington Springs to compete in the 281 Conference meet. The Conference meet was the final competition for the junior high Blackhawk tracksters.

In the girls’ events, individuals who placed in the top eight of their respective events are as follows: Kenzie Uecker – second in shot put (27 ft. 4.75 in.), sixth in discus (62 ft.); Kaylee Viktora – sixth in shot put (23 ft. 0.25 in.), fourth in discus (67 ft. 1 in.); Carly Edwards – seventh in discus (59 ft. 10 in.); Sawyer Larson – first in long jump (13 ft. 3 in.), fourth in 100M hurdles (19.84 seconds), third in 100M dash; Brooklyn Larson – fifth in long jump (11 ft. 9 in.); Ellie Hofer – fourth in 1,600M run (7.12.18); Kaidence Fridley – third in 400M dash (1.13.77); Cheyann Larson – seventh in 400M dash (1.18.76); and Jayda Hohn – third in 200M dash (31.24 seconds).

In the relay races, the SCW girls’ 4x100M relay team of Hohn, Fridley, B. Larson and Ramsey Fouberg placed third with a time of 1.00.52; the 4x200M team of Hohn, Fridley, S. Larson and Fouberg earned second, finishing with 2.04.53; and the medley team of C. Larson, Evalynn Olson, B. Larson, and Fouberg came in fourth with 2.22.00.

In the boys’ division, individuals who placed eighth or better are as follows: Mathias Lindgren – eighth in high jump (4 ft. 2 in.); Teagen Eggleston – first in 400M dash (1.00.43), second in 200M dash (26.84 seconds); and Westen White – third in 400M dash (1.03.62), sixth in 200M dash (28.59 seconds).

In the relay races, the Blackhawk boys’ 4x100M relay team of Eggleston, White, Scofield and Lindgren placed first (57.84 seconds); the medley relay team of Lindgren, Scofield, White and Eggleston took home first again with a time of 2.04.16.
