On Monday, Oct. 28, the SCW Lady Blackhawks traveled to Howard to play a rescheduled game against the Tigers. It was a great way to start the week for the ladies, bringing home an easy three-set win with set scores of 5-25, 22-25 and 21-25.

On Tuesday, Oct. 29, the Lady Blackhawks had their final regular-season game in Mt. Vernon against the MVP Titans. With Head Coach Darcy Deinert still at the helm, the Titans are a strong team, and they proved that again last Tuesday night handing the SCW ladies a three-set loss with scores of 12-25, 21-25 and 11-25.

SCW ended their regular season with a 17-10 record. They hosted their first round of the Region 3B Tournament in Forestburg on Monday, Nov. 4 against the Flandreau Indian Lady Indians. The outcome of that game would determine if they continued to the second round of play on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Results of the tournament games will be in next week’s issue of the Sanborn Weekly Journal.

On Halloween, a table in the third-grade room in Woonsocket was covered with what third-grade teacher, Mrs. Jessica Bruce called a “gross out” lesson on adjectives. She had the third, fourth and fifth graders come into her room and put their hands in boxes that were labeled with eery names, such as zombie hand, mummy toes, vomit, werewolf tongue, intestines, boogers, bat ears, monster teeth, maggots, etc. The students were asked to be creative with adjectives to describe what they were feeling in the boxes. It was a very interesting and entertaining way to learn about the use of adjectives.

The next day, Nov. 1, the Woonsocket Elementary teachers organized a number of STEM stations for the PK through sixth graders. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The students were broken into nine multi-aged groups, and the groups rotated through all nine stations that were all STEM challenges with a Halloween theme. The activities included pumpkin catapults, skeleton bone bridges, pumpkin towers, spider building, witches’ broom flying challenge, spider parachutes, pumpkin match challenge, candy corn stacking and building October objects with Legos.

The Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central (WWSSC) Blackhawks drew the short straw for their first round of this year’s playoffs, as they did not have home-field advantage, but they proved that to not be an issue. In a low-scoring defensive battle, the Blackhawks kept the Aberdeen Roncalli Cavaliers from completing a two-point conversion in the last few minutes of the game to hold on to a one-point lead and win their first round of post-season play, 14-13.

Coach Schmitz was incredibly impressed with his team’s performance stating, “Wow! What a game. Both teams played really well. We were able to create some turnovers and take advantage of some things. Offensively, we were able to move the ball in the air and on the ground. Our kids came together and played a tough, physical game. I couldn’t be prouder of our kids. Next week, we will go up against a very good Winner team.”

The game against Winner will be played tonight (Thursday) in Winner starting at 6 p.m. Although the Warriors are currently undefeated and rated first in the 11B division, the Blackhawks have already played them this season on Winner’s home field, and they had a good showing in an 18-30 loss, which is the most points that have been scored against Winner by any opponent so far this season. The game can be watched online on Winner Warriors Live.
