4-H

The Town ‘N Kountry Kids Blue Group 4-H Club enjoyed an afternoon at a jewelry making workshop in the Letcher Community Center on July 13. Approximately 15 members enjoyed the activity with Greta Sonne in charge; Karen Sonne assisted.  The members watched a video, worked on bead selection, style, and correct finishing techniques. Members enjoyed making bracelets and necklaces that they took home.

Wednesday night was a very exciting time at dog practice! Participants got to try out five new obstacles purchased for dog agility. New equipment included a tire jump, dog walk, weave poles, see-saw and pause table.

It was so much fun teaching the dogs and encouraging them to try these new things. For many of the dogs, it was scary to walk across a see-saw that moved and to balance across a narrow walkway. Many techniques (including dog treats) were used to encourage them every step of the way.

Dogs and humans are learning patience and technique as they prepare for the upcoming dog show at Achievement Days.

Sanborn County 4-H recently held their annual 4-H Special Foods Contest on Tuesday, July 11, at the 4-H building in Forestburg. Ten 4-Hers spent the afternoon showcasing their culinary talents.  Judging the contest this year were Margo Edwards and Paula Linke.

Contestants must bring all the supplies needed to prepare and serve the recipe they selected.  The 4-Hers also need to:

1. Use correct measuring, mixing and preparation techniques of the product and know why;

2. Know food safety involved in food preparation techniques (time, temperature and personal sanitation);

3. Name the five food groups from MyPlate;

4. Know the six basic nutrients;

5. Know the main vitamins and minerals and those present in the ingredients used in their recipe.
