4-H

Diversity is the best way to describe the wide range of topics covered at the 4-H Public Presentation Contest on June 19. Spectators present heard about bees, sewing, family history, dogs, breeds of beef, how to make your own bug spray, betta fish, John Deere and many more things!  The Sanborn County 4-Hers impressed the audience and judges with their mixture of illustrated talks, public presentations and demonstrations. Judging the event this year were Carrie Howard and Candi Danek.

‘Tis the season for 4-H projects and workshops! Thanks to Janet Maeschen, Master Food Preserver, 4-Hers had the opportunity to attend a canning workshop on June 21. It was a great day to learn how to can pickled carrots and to finish two projects in the process! To better accommodate the youth, a morning and afternoon shift were offered.

The canning method that was used at this workshop is called “hot packing.” This is the practice of heating freshly prepared food to boiling, simmering it and then promptly filling jars loosely with the boiled food.  Each participant was able to learn the many steps it takes to complete this process.

Plans are in the works for another canning workshop in July for making jams and jellies.

Mason Moody competed at the annual Adrian Foote Sr. Memorial PRCA rodeo in New Town, N.D., on Saturday, June 17. He scored 86 points on the bull Peaches Pride to win the two day rodeo. Moody was awarded a memorial quilt, along with prize money for winning the rodeo.

After finishing the PBR regular season in May, Moody is now choosing to enter some PRCA rodeos during the summer. He was in Clear Lake on Wednesday, June 21, for an extreme bulls competition and will be at the regular rodeo on June 24. He will travel to Buffalo and Granite Falls, Minn., on the two days in between.
