4-H

Given the unprecedented challenges associated with COVID-19, the South Dakota 4-H made several modifications and changes for the 2020 South Dakota State Fair. To encourage a low risk event, one of those changes included creating “Small Animal Saturday” on Saturday, Aug. 29. The Poultry Show, Rabbit Show and Companion Animal Show were all moved to this pre-fair event.  Each exhibitor was limited to two animals and it was a carrier in/carrier out show with no stalling on the grounds.  Also held that day were the State Horse Show and State Dog Show.

The Town N Kountry Kids Red Group 4-H Club visited the residents at Prairie View Healthcare Center in Woonsocket last week to share their 4-H projects. Of course, the 4-H members could not visit inside the Center so they worked to come up with a creative plan that allowed them to visit from outside. Through Santel Communications, the Center has set up an internal TV channel for the residents.  Shania Cornelius, Activities Assistant, was able to video each of the 4-H members with an iPad as they told about their project. The residents were able to watch the video from the TVs in their rooms. 4-H members also showed their projects through the window of each resident’s room. Member projects shared included sheep, a dog, kittens, a duck, a rabbit, and various visual arts, photography, hobbies, and home environment projects.

Adjusting for the pandemic, the State 4-H Horse Show was held at the Heartland Arena in Huron on Aug. 29 and 30. While a few events were dropped, the majority of the show was able to successfully be held. Competing from Sanborn County were Avery Miller, Cannon Zoss, Delaney Zoss and Bailey Feistner, and every one of them brought home at least one award in their division.
