Cupcake challenge results

By Janet Maeschen

The cupcake challenge at 4-H Achievement Days was a delicious success. At this year’s event, there were 30 participants with a total of 19 entries. They could choose to enter as a team of two or individually. Ages ranged from 5 to 18 years old. Every entry had a different theme to decorate their homemade cupcakes and had to set up a small display.  The runner-up team was Hudson and Ramsey Fouberg with the rodeo theme.  The first-place winner was a bath time theme entered by Mary Catherine Hansen.

All participants received a four-ounce jar of honey sponsored by the Town ‘N Kountry Kids Blue Group. The cupcakes were sold on a silent auction to raise money for Sanborn County 4-Hers attending National Congress this November.  Sanborn County is sending six youth to this awesome event.

Something very exciting happened on Friday night of this year’s Sanborn County Achievement Days last weekend. At around 5:30 p.m., a highly anticipated groundbreaking ceremony took place for construction to start on the new addition to the current 4-H building in Forestburg. The new addition is going to be attached to the north side of the existing building and will double the size of the facility.

With a hefty $430,000 price tag for the addition, the building committee made up of Paula Linke, Riley Zoss-Littau, Myron Sonne, Scott Senska, Andy Ettswold, Art and Audrey Kneen and Rod Weber have been raising funds for over four years to get this project accomplished, and the time has finally come to see their diligent work pay off. The initial goal was $300,000, then $350,000, and they are now working on $430,000, as they have dealt with an increase in costs since the COVID epidemic. They are currently at just over $360,000 raised after they received a nice donation of $5,000 from the family of Omer and Lucile Fouberg on July 31.

On Wednesday, July 19, emergency services personnel traveled to the Forestburg Farmers Elevator for a Pre-Incident Planning Session. The purpose of this training is to learn about the business and discuss how to handle emergency events like fire, grain engulfment and high angle rescue. Organizations attending were Artesian Fire Department, Canova Fire Department, Howard Fire Department, Letcher Fire Department, Sanborn County Ambulance, Sanborn County Sheriff’s Department and Town & Country Fire District (Woonsocket). Approximately 30 personnel were  in attendance.
