Local volunteer Julie Davis, Forestburg, was recognized for countless hours of service to the community during a local Modern Woodmen of America member event on Oct. 17.

Davis has spent a lifetime making an impact through volunteering her time.  As a young mom, she served as an active member of the PTA, a Sunday School teacher, children’s choir director and began a 30+ year role as a member of the Sanborn County American Cancer Society where she spent several years heading up the fifth and sixth grade girls and boys basketball tournament fundraisers and helping out with the annual tour of homes.

Through Davis’s career in education, she was a member of the SD Elementary Principal’s Association, SD Counselor Association and the SD Reading Council, serving as president of the Pony Hills chapter. She served on the Woonsocket Library board and Friends of the Library, actively pursued a 21st Century grant to establish an after-school program, and with the help of the special education staff began a part time preschool.

MELON FESTIVAL attendees take shelter from the heat in the shade of the picnic shelter.

Forestburg’s annual Melon Festival was held Saturday, Aug. 19. Despite the Heat Index being over 100 degrees, attendees enjoyed partaking in a car show, bean bag tournament, a couple vendors, and food, including free watermelon supplied by Shane’s Melons and Larson’s Melons. Kids also had fun with a couple bouncy houses, a petting zoo, and wagon train rides. The musical duo Gordy and Debbie performed music for the festival this year.

Jake Pickette of Mitchell was this year’s winner of the 50/50 drawing and received $318.

On Saturday afternoon, Aug. 19, the Forestburg Lutheran Church held an open house for visitors from the Melon Festival to take a break from the heat with some root beer floats and air conditioning while they viewed the church. A free will donation was accepted for the floats. Drawings were held, with the winners winning either a $25 gift certificate for Country Pumper or a gift basket holding watermelon-themed items. The winners were Sheryl Turner, Heather Fridley, and Sarah Adams.
