The South Dakota High School Rodeo Association regional qualifying rodeos began this past weekend in Huron. Mason Moody of Letcher won the bull riding competition, got fourth place in team roping with his partner, Seth Gaikowski of Waubay, and got 10th in calf roping all in Saturday’s competition. He also went back and won the bull riding event in Sunday’s rodeo.

In addition to Moody’s performances in the rodeo events, Hannah Dickson, a senior at Sanborn Central, brought in the American flag on horseback for Saturday’s competition. Dickson has recently joined the National Guard and was wearing her uniform as she displayed the flag for the events.

A good crowd of about 75 attended the Letcher American Legion Post 93 Memorial service on Monday. Speaker Jean Morrison gave an interesting talk about Arlington National Cemetery.

Auxiliary President Sandi Ruml and Chaplin Pat Nelson did a Memorial ceremony for departed member Clara Wise. District 6 is comprised of 19 towns in the area and lost 34 Auxiliary members last year. Clara was a vital part of the Auxiliary and will forever be remembered for her famous baked beans.

Pastor Tim Pulkrabeck led the opening prayer and benediction. Morgan Hoffman and Caleb Kneen read “In Flanders Fields” and “America’s Answer.” Alexis Kelly played taps after the color guard fired their military salute. Rolls and coffee were served following the service for a free will donation. They were donated by Shirley Enfield and Buckshots.
