Mason Moody of rural Letcher had another good weekend with his second first-place ride on the Velocity Tour on Saturday, Feb. 18 in Memphis, Tenn. That ride earned him $7,366 and his winning score of a 91 put him in the 90-point club now, which also puts him at another level in the bull riding world. He is now sitting in second place in the Velocity Tour standings.

Because of his success on the Velocity Tour, he was recently called up to compete in the Unleash the Beast Tour, which is another level up in the professional bull riding circuit. He is excited to take on this higher level of competition and hopes to score enough points to get into the top 35 riders, which will open more doors for him and allow him to compete in some rodeos that only allow the top 35-40 to ride.

On Saturday, Feb. 11, 19-year-old Mason Moody of Letcher “clinched the very first event win of his rocketing career,” according to the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) website. He was competing in Palm Springs in the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour event and finished in fourth after riding to the whistle on Friday night in round one of the competition, scoring 85 points.

Moody continued into round two on Saturday but was dumped from his second-round bull at the five-second mark, and he didn’t get a score for that ride. Knowing he had to put everything into his final ride on Saturday in order to have a chance at the championship, Moody prepared for the third and final round of competition and recorded an 86-point score. This clinched first place for the young cowboy, who has dreamt of this accomplishment for several years, and now it’s a reality.

In the South Dakota State Jackrabbit Women’s 82-54 victory over the North Dakota State Bison on Saturday, Feb. 4, Myah Selland surpassed her 2,000th career point. Selland is only the fourth player between the SDSU men’s and women’s programs to accomplish meeting the 2,000-point mark. She only needed 10 points going into Saturday’s game to reach 2,000 points, and she ended the game with 15 points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists.

Selland is the daughter of Brett and Kelly Selland of rural Letcher and a 2017 graduate of Sanborn Central High School.
