The Woonsocket Community Club had their annual city-wide cleanup last Thursday, May 16. Many volunteers worked together to take care of abandoned lots along with dispensing of debris collected by homeowners who cleaned up their own yards but needed help getting things hauled to the city dump ground.

According to Community Club President Gay Swenson, “We hauled a lot of trees, and individuals were hauling all day on their own, too. It was nice to see people mowing up the areas where we took piles from after the city cleanup. It was a good day, and the city looks good afterward. A couple of us worked with the city on Friday, finishing up the big piles that were too big for small groups to load. It is good for the Community Club to work together on this with the city crew each year.”

The City of Woonsocket would like to remind everyone that they have established the month of May as “Free Dump Month” at the city dump ground to help anyone who would like to get their spring cleaning and yard work done in anticipation of the nice weather we will hopefully experience in the coming months.

On Monday, May 13, Woonsocket’s Town and County Fire District was called to a hay fire at the Todd and Kari Olinger farm southwest of Woonsocket. Five trucks and 16 firefighters spent about four hours putting out the blaze.

Just one day later, on Tuesday, May 14, they were called to a vehicle fire in the DakPak parking lot on the east edge of Woonsocket. It took three trucks approximately 45 minutes to put out that fire.

Then, on Saturday, May 18, 10 Woonsocket firefighters and three members of the Sanborn County Ambulance crew went through some training at an older home in the northwest corner of Woonsocket scheduled for a controlled burn in less windy conditions.

With the summer months comes more opportunity for fire hazards in South Dakota. All local volunteer fire departments in Sanborn County ask that everyone keep a close eye on control burns along with machinery, bonfires, fireworks and all the other things that come along with summer in the state. Their hope is for everyone to have a safe and happy summer season; however, if the need arises, do not hesitate to call for help by dialing 911 for the nearest fire department and ambulance crew to come and help with eveything they can.

On Wednesday, May 1, Rian Boschee broke ground for the Woonsocket Community Garden to officially allow community members to grow their own produce. Boschee spearheaded the drive to get the garden going and found help from Jessi Bucholz, who was also in attendance to get things started.

Boschee started the process a few months ago by promoting the idea in a post on his Facebook page, asking if there would be any interest in a community garden. When he determined that there would be enough interest to make a community garden successful, he approached some city officials to see if the city had any ground that could be used for said garden. When they brought up an area that would be good for it, Boschee then attended the next Woonsocket City Council meeting to get the use of the ground approved for the creation of a garden. City council members were on board, and things just started rolling from there.

Soon, a private Facebook page for people interested in the garden was created, and plots were advertised for rent all over town, social media and the newspaper. So far, there have been seven takers, but there are 15 total spots, so there are still some for the taking.
