Woonsocket senior Kenna Ochsner, right, is pictured here with her cousin Briley Viktora, a sophomore at WHS, who gave blood for the first time to help Ochsner meet her goal for the blood drive she hosted as her senior project.

While fulfilling her senior project requirement, Woonsocket senior Kenna Ochsner also learned the rewarding feeling that goes into helping others while she hosted a successful blood drive in Woonsocket on Thursday, Feb. 8.

In the few weeks leading up to the actual date of the drive, Ochsner reached out to high school students at WHS to see if any of those who are 16 or older would be willing to donate, and she signed up several new donors. She then contacted friends and family outside of the school to see if any of them would be willing to donate, and again, got a great response and signed up some new donors as well as some returnees. Ochsner then turned to her mentor for the project, Mrs. Carrie Howard, for help in contacting donors from the list provided by Vitalant, the company the blood drive was coordinated through.

A huge crowd of about 500 people attended the benefit held in Artesian on Saturday night to help Brad Zobel as he fights cancer.

On Saturday, Feb. 10, the Artesian Community Center was filled with love, support and camaraderie, as around 500 people from all over Sanborn County and beyond gathered there to help Brad Zobel, an Artesian resident and member of the Artesian Volunteer Fire Department, who is battling cancer. There was food, gun raffles, silent auctions and more as opportunities for everyone to contribute to the cause, while having a good time with friends, family and neighbors.

In October of 2023, Zobel was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer that had metastasized to his liver. At the time, he didn’t have any health insurance, which is why he waited so long before seeing a doctor about his condition. After his diagnosis, Zobel and his girlfriend of five years, Angel, decided to get married, thus, he is now on her health insurance policy from her employment with Paulson’s Heating and Cooling. However, as most people know, fighting cancer takes quite a toll on a person’s body as well as their pocketbook, even with insurance to help, so the wonderful people in the Artesian Volunteer Fire Department decided to aid their fellow firefighter with an event to raise funds and help defray some of the expenses.

On Wednesday, Jan. 31, Penny Farris left the Sanborn County courthouse for her last day of employment after working in the building for over 33 years. She started in Oct. 1990 as the secretary for the County Nurse, working in that office for nine years. Following that position, she worked as the secretary for the Director of Equalization for 15 years, and then she moved into the role of Director of Equalization for the past 10 years. Farris was celebrated all day and then enjoyed supper that evening with some co-workers and some past co-workers to help her move on to this new stage in her life. Congratulations, Penny, and thank you for your service to Sanborn County.
