Greg Cornelius, Forestburg, received a Quilt of Valor on Sunday, Nov. 10, at the Veterans Day lunch in Artesian. 

The Quilts of Valor Foundation gifts handmade quilts to veterans and service members touched by war. 

Cornelius served in the South Dakota Army National Guard from November 1981 through May 2005. He was a member of the Second Battalion, 147th Field Artillery deployed to Iraq in 2004 supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. 

The red and blue quilt was presented by Sara Fridley, president of Prairie Winds Quilt of Valor. Cornelius was nominated by the Artesian American Legion Auxiliary Unit #47. His wife, Jeanette; children, Bradeyn and Shania; and mother, Carla Cornelius, attended. 

The presentation was part of the unit’s annual Veterans Day luncheon offered free to area veterans and their families. Members provided pulled pork sandwiches, cheesy potatoes, green bean casserole, plus a variety of salads and desserts. Many door prizes were also awarded. 

The unit will meet next at 1:30 p.m., Dec. 10, at the community center in Artesian.

The Town ‘N Kountry Kids Red Group 4-H Club helped to celebrate American Education Week in the area schools last week.  Club members wrote personal notes to teachers and staff, and also made up a gift of M&M’s with a card attached that had sayings like “Your Work is Motivating & Meaningful” and “You Are Marvelous & Magnificent” with points about patience, inspiration, sunshine and smiles, warmth and caring and hearts. Each teacher/staff member at Woonsocket School as well as some teachers at Sanborn Central and Wessington Springs received a note and gift. The club also provided a treat of brownies in the staff breakrooms at Woonsocket School.

On Saturday, Nov. 23, the annual SHE Awards event was held at the Huron Convention Center. The event is held to honor extraordinary women living in and around the Huron community. This year’s event recognized three nominees committed to the betterment of their communities, Brooke King, Emilie Lindgren and Alexa Goertz.

Brooke King, of Letcher and Special Education Director for Woonsocket School, was named a nominee in the Unsung Hero category for her dedication to helping special education students who might otherwise fall through the cracks achieve their highest potential.

Emilie Lindgren and Alexa Goertz, seniors at Woonsocket High School, were nominees of the inaugural Rising Star Scholarship category. Lindgren and Goertz were recognized for their service and spirit in making a difference in their communities.
