Residents from Prairie View Healthcare Center enjoy a movie together at the Woonsocket Community and Events Center during their evacuation on Monday afternoon.

On Monday, Oct. 16, all residents and staff were evacuated from the Prairie View Healthcare Center after the facility’s carbon monoxide detectors went off indicating the level of carbon monoxide was at dangerous levels in the building. Residents were moved to the Woonsocket Community and Events Center on the corner of Dumont Avenue, and they were there for a few hours while the leak was found and repaired.

According to members of the Town and Country Fire District of Woonsocket, someone from Prairie View called them to come in after their detectors went off and at the initial entrance into the building the readings were at around 42 on a scale of 0-100. As they used the reader throughout the building, there were a few areas with 50-70 readings, so it was determined that everyone needed to evacuate.

437 Project raises $251,007 for Helpline Center

Woonsocket welcomes 437 Project runners over the weekend

SIOUX FALLS – On Sunday afternoon during this year’s The 437 Project Finish Line Celebration, The 437 Project presented a check to Helpline Center at Levitt at the Falls for $251,007.93. This donation is a summation of sponsorships and public donations, and makes The 437 Project’s total donation to Helpline Center $371,942 in two years.

“I was speechless when The 437 Project runners announced the total amount of the donation to the Helpline Center,” said Janet Kittams, CEO of Helpline Center. “This represents the largest financial gift that the Helpline Center has ever received. This gift ensures that the Helpline Center can continue to provide hope and help across the state for our work in suicide prevention, crisis support and grief after care. Our hearts are overflowing with gratitude.”

The 437 Project was born of a passion for bolstering both physical and mental wellness and the often overlooked connection between the two. This year’s project began Thursday, Sept. 21, at the Wyoming/South Dakota Border, where 12 runners took turns relay-style running across the state of South Dakota. Along the route, The 437 Project team stopped in Rapid City, Pierre, Mitchell and Sioux Falls to share their stories with those communities, offer mental health resources, and ask for donations.

On Saturday, Sept. 16, firefighters from around the area converged in Woonsocket for the Town & Country Fire Department’s fourth annual Firefighter Training Day. This annual event is held to provide quality, real world training and information to fire departments. This year’s topic was all things hose and nozzle related. Students walked away with a better understanding of the difference between types of hose and nozzles, how to maintain, how to efficiently use, and how to be a better prepared firefighter. The class was made possible by Fire & Iron Station 49 motorcycle club and donations made to the department. Instructors once again came from the Sioux Falls-based Pheasant Country FOOLS. Eighteen firefighters from seven fire departments attended. Departments attending were Canistota, Canova, Fedora, Huron, Mitchell, Redfield and Town & Country.
