Obituaries

Shirley Maxine Starr, 71, of Lane, passed away Sunday, Dec. 12, 2021, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls of cancer.

Funeral Services were held Friday, Dec. 17, at the Basham Funeral Chapel in Wessington Springs.  Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery.  Visitation was Thursday at the funeral home with a prayer service.

Shirley was born on July 4, 1950, to Lee and Maxine (Bunde) Miller at their family farmhouse south of Lane.  She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended Lane school.

She married Jim Starr in February 2002. Most of Shirley’s working career was spent at Van Dykes in Woonsocket. She retired in 2012.

She enjoyed spending time with family, and her favorite time spent with them was the Fourth of July.

Shirley is survived by her two sons, Eric Miller of Brookings and Blake (Angie) Miller of Mt. Vernon; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Cindy (Craig) Schuman of Black Hawk; one niece, one nephew and three great-nieces and -nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Terry Miller; and husband, Jim.

Darren Morgan

Abilene, Texas

Darren Duane Morgan, 51, of Abilene, Texas, and formerly of Artesian, passed away on Dec. 10, 2021, at Hendricks Medical Center in Abilene, Texas.

Darren was born on April 2, 1970, to Duane and Virginia Kay Morgan at Mitchell. During his youth, Darren spent many hours doing farm work and building tree houses and other projects around the family farm in Artesian, learning to build and repair houses and how to fix anything.

Darren graduated with 13 years of perfect attendance from Artesian High School in 1988 and attended the South Dakota School of Mines.

Darren is survived by the love of his life, Anita Schnier; his daughter, Amanda Schnier of Abilene, Texas; one adoptive grandson; his mother, Virginia Kay Morgan of Mitchell and Harlingen, Texas; his sister, Darla (Pat) Kiner of Mitchell; four brothers, Dennis (Donna) of Artesian, Daryl (Anna) of Abilene, Texas, Dale (Marie) of Artesian and Dean of Forestburg; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.

Darren was preceded in death by his father, Duane Morgan in 2019, and his grandparents, Virgil and Blanche Morgan and Albert and Daphne Wendt.

Joseph Turner

Woonsocket

Joseph Turner, 63, of Woonsocket, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2021, at the Huron Regional Medical Center. 

His funeral service will be 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 17, at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron with burial at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery Huron. Visitation, with the family present, will be from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 16, at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron, or one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Friday. 

Joseph Turner, the son of Joseph D. and Edna R. (Picha) Turner, was born on Jan. 14, 1958, in Prairie Du Chein, Wis. He attended schools in the Missoula, Mont., area and graduated from Missoula High School. Joseph served his country in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged. Joseph worked as a mechanic for Goodyear Tires for many years until finishing out his career as a salesman for Napa Auto Parts in Huron.

Joseph married Sheryl Amick on July 28, 1984, in Missoula, Mont.  The couple moved to Woonsocket in 1992.

Joseph was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the National Rifle Association. Joseph enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and hunting. He was a hunter safety instructor for the Woonsocket Game, Fish and Wildlife Department for many years.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Sheryl of Woonsocket; son, Kyle Turner of Yankton; daughter, Athena (Randy) Nelson of Madison, Minn.; two grandsons; five sisters, Sharon (Dave) Schillo of Garrison, Mont., Janet (Tom) Flanagan of Eagle River, Alaska, Diane (Charlie) Bichenhauser of Plains, Mont., Esther (Randy) Lavoie of Missoula, Mont., and Mary (Greg) Wickes of Missoula, Mont.; his little brother through the Big Brother and Big Sister program,  Joel (Jennifer) Adams of Spokane, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; a brother in infancy; and brother-in-law, Bernie Schillo.
