Donna Burkel

Woonsocket Community Health Center  included in expansion options

Donna Burkel, 73, of Woonsocket, died of natural causes at her home on Friday, July 18, 2020.

Her funeral service was held Wednesday, July 22, at the Basham Funeral Chapel in Woonsocket at 1 p.m. Visitation was held Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial was at the Restlawn Memory Garden Cemetery in Huron. Rev. Zach Kingery officiated.

Donna Jean Burkel, the daughter of Roland and Blanche (Hibbard) Wieting, was born on March 8, 1947, in Huron. She lived on a farm near Hitchcock until 1957 when she moved to Huron with her family. In October of 1958, they moved to Woonsocket. On Feb. 17,1973, Donna was united in marriage to Donald Burkel in Wessington Springs.

Donna worked at various places in and around Woonsocket, Alpena, and Huron as a well-known cook and most recently as store help at the Salvation Army in Huron. Donna’s beloved hobbies were cooking and tending her vegetable and flower gardens. She loved her family and friends.

Donna was survived by her husband of 47 years, Donald of Woonsocket; children, Danaee Marquette of Aurora, Jona Hokanson (Mike Wanous) of Huron, Mathew (Sarah) Burkel of Woonsocket, and Curtis Burkel of Woonsocket; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Rolanda Larive of Huron; and numerous family and friends.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents, Roland and Blanche; brother, Elroy Wieting; sister, Mary Johnson; son, Daniel Thompson; and granddaughter, Isabel Burkel.

Ronald Emmett

Mitchell

Ronald Emmett, 72, of Mitchell, died Friday, July 17, 2020, at his home under hospice care in Mitchell. 

A private, family graveside service will be held at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Arrangements are by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Ronald Walton Emmett was born on May 1, 1948, to Walton and Mildred (Songer) Emmett in Jefferson, Iowa. He attended elementary school through third grade in Iowa, and in 1957, they moved to Artesian. Ron graduated from high school in Artesian. He was also a member of 4-H.

After high school, Ronald spent six years in the Guards. He farmed and raised horses and owned a gas station for 18 years. In 1996, Ron and his wife, Mona, moved to Mitchell where he was employed at Boyd’s Gunstocks, Rews TV and Appliance, TSC, and Toshiba. Together, Ron and Mona established R&M Rentals, LLC in 2005.

Ronald was united in marriage to Mona Zobel on Nov. 19, 1969. Their marriage gave them two sons and two daughters. In 2019, Ron and Mona celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Ron is survived by his wife, Mona of Mitchell; sons, Ronald (Jennifer) Emmett of Lincoln, Neb. and Jared (Pamela) Emmett of Parkston; daughters, Lisa (Dustin) Kunkel and Michele (Matthew) Podhradsky both of Mitchell; numerous grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Albert (Deb) Zobel.

He is preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Houston Kunkel.

Richard Huber, 76, of Huron, passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2020, at Avantara Huron. 

A private family service was held on Tuesday, June 30, at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron with burial at the St. Wilfrid’s Cemetery in Woonsocket. 

Richard Huber, the son of Robert and Irene (Johnson) Huber, was born on June 1, 1944, in Wessington Springs.  Starting at the age of five years old, Richard attended the School for Crippled Children in Jamestown, N.D., and graduated from the school on June 1, 1962. During his school years, Richard would come home every summer and help his father on the family farm. After graduation, Richard continued to help on the family farm in Woonsocket.

Richard was a member of the St. Wilfrid Catholic Church in Woonsocket. He was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins and enjoyed reading, watching movies, and discussing politics. Richard loved history and worked tirelessly putting together the Huber family genealogy.  He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and taking care of the lawn and flowers on the family farm.

Grateful for having shared in his life are his sister, Judi Reilly of Wolsey; brothers, John (Sheila) Huber of Blackhawk and Bradly Huber of Huron; his nieces and nephews and many great nieces and great nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Irene, and brother-in-law, Robert Reilly.
