Vera May

Mitchell

Vera May, 83, of Mitchell, passed away Friday, March 27, 2020, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell.  

A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Artesian.

Vera Denice May was born in Artesian to Wayne and Lou (Gaston) Peer on Nov. 13, 1936. She attended school in Artesian, graduating in 1954. She married Al May on June 28, 1954, in Artesian. They made their home in Artesian for many years, raising their family and enjoying life. In 1988, they moved to Canton and then in 1997, after Al passed, Vera moved to Lake Madison. In 2001, she moved to Mitchell.

Vera loved being outdoors, hunting, fishing, motorcycling, and camping with her family. Vera was always busy raising dogs; she was an avid animal lover. Vera loved tending to her yard. She was, also, a big Nebraska Cornhuskers fan. Vera always enjoyed the South Dakota pheasant opener. Vera enjoyed going to her children’s, grandchildren’s, and great-grandchildren’s activities. 

Vera is survived by her daughter, Connie (Dan) Muller of Fedora; sons, Terry (Connie) May of Sioux Falls and Danny (Renee) May of Hartford; nine grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; siblings, Warren Peer, Donna (Cliff) Glanzer, and Beverly Wire; sister-in-law, Eleanor Shoemaker; and many nieces and nephews.

Vera is preceded in death by her husband, Al; sons, Gary and Timmy; sister, Norma Heidinger; brother, LaVern Peer; and her parents.

EVELYN WALTERS

Letcher

Evelyn Walters, 90, of Letcher, S.D., passed away Sunday, May 17, 2020 in Mitchell, S.D.  

Visitation was from 12:00 until 6:00 P.M., Friday, May 22, 2020 at Will Funeral Chapel. A graveside service was at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, May 23, 2020, at Viola Valley Center Cemetery in Wessington Springs, SD.

Evelyn May (Morrison) Walters was born on May 9, 1930, in rural Davison County to Floyd Morrison Sr. and Myrtle (Davis) Morrison. She grew up on family farms in rural Davison County. She attended country school, and Mitchell Senior High, graduating in 1949. She attended South Dakota State College, at Brookings for two years, getting a teaching certificate. She taught for several years at different country schools, including Hopper in rural Plankinton, then at Artesian Public School. She worked as a waitress at the Brigg Café and Newberry Lunch Counter.

In her youth, she was a member of 4-H, then became a 4-H Leader for 60 years. As a leader she attended 4-H Leaders Forum in Washington D.C. She was also a member of Extension for many years. She was also a member of a quilt guild and a Doll Club in Mitchell.

Evelyn was united in marriage to Leland Walters on May 26, 1951, in Huron.

They farmed east of Letcher and she continued to live there with Brian until her death.

At the age of 40, she returned to college at Dakota Wesleyan College, attending night classes and summer school, graduating in 1973. That summer, she started at Shopko, where she worked for the next 25 years before retiring. While working at Shopko, she trained new cashiers at other stores before they opened.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leland; one brother, Doug; two sisters, Mary Doering and Darlene Knutson; her parents, Floyd Sr. and Myrtle Morrison; two brothers-in-law, Samuel Perry, and Dean Bowman; a niece, Vicky Knutson; and a nephew, Joey Morrison. 

Grateful for having shared in her life are her four children, LeRoy (Becky) Walters, Mitchell, S.D., Marlene Deethardt, Brookings, S.D., Mark (Bobbi Jo) Walters, Ananconda, Mont., Brian Walters, Letcher, S.D.; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

     She is survived by her siblings, Dee (Don) De Jong, Floyd Jr. (Shirley) Morrison, Walter (Schirley) Morrison, Shirley Bowman, Beverly Perry, Karen (Dave) Jorgenson, Darwin (Jean) Morrison, Carolyn Ruth Morrison, Cheri (Greg) Deis, and Lloyd (Jane) Morrison.

Arlene Moore

Pierre

Arlene Moore, 95, of Pierre and formerly of Mitchell, died on Monday, May 4, 2020, at her home in Pierre.

Inurnment will be at the Servicemen’s Memorial Cemetery in Mitchell.

Arlene Leona Moore was born on Aug. 13, 1924, in Artesian to Clyde and Edith (Wise) Scott. She grew up and attended school in Artesian and graduated from Artesian High School in 1942. She attended college at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell and graduated from the US Cadet Nurse Corps at the Methodist Hospital in 1946.

She married Otto Neugebauer in 1948, and they farmed and made their home near Hillside in Douglas County until Otto’s death in 1962. To this union they had one son, Tom. In 1972, she married Wayne Moore in Rapid City. She felt very blessed when she became the significant part of being involved in his five daughters’ lives. In 1984, they retired and moved to Mitchell. Her last five years she spent in Pierre to be closer to her son.

Arlene loved to bake cookies and bread. She loved gardening, crafting, and watching wildlife out her patio doors. She also had a great sense of humor and was slow to judge and quick to forgive.

Grateful for having shared in her life are her son, Tom (Natalie) Neugebauer; five stepdaughters, Connie (Art) Smith, Colleen (John) Cooper, Cindy (George) Oliver, Cathy (Dave) Grubb and Colette Nordstrom; three grandsons; and many step-grandchildren and step- great-grandchildren. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; two brothers, Stuart and Hubert; two sisters, Dorothy and Luella; and son-in-law, Max Nordstrom.
