David Wenz

Letcher

David Wenz, 66, of Letcher, passed away Thursday, Oct. 5, 2023, at his residence. 

A graveside service was held Friday, Oct. 13, at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Huron. A celebration of life was held on Friday, Oct. 13, at Crossroads Hotel and Event Center in Huron. Funeral arrangements were in the care of Will Funeral Chapel. Sympathy cards can be sent to Will Funeral Chapel to be forwarded to the family.

David was born in Huron, on Nov. 18, 1956, to Walter and Darlene (Phinney) Wenz. He attended and graduated from Letcher High School. After school, David worked at the grain elevator in Letcher and then at ABC Tractor Salvage in Letcher. He was employed at Trail King in Mitchell for over 30 years and was working there at the time of his death.

He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, camping, fishing and riding his four-wheeler. He also loved and owned several Labrador retrievers through the years.

David is survived by his siblings, Dean (Lorra) Wenz of Colorado, Todd Wenz of South Dakota, Teri (Mark) Dyar of South Dakota; five nephews; one great-nephew; and one great-niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Rodney Wenz.

Karen Knight

Spearfish

Karen Lee Knight, 73, formerly of rural Lane, passed away on Sept. 25, 2023.

There will be a cremation and a celebration of life with immediate family. In lieu of flowers and a service, the family wishes memorial contributions to assist in building of a new band shell stage at Spearfish City Park.

Karen was born to Donald and Verlyn (Tingle) Steichen and raised on a farm near Lane. Karen met her husband, Merle Knight, at a Lane Ballroom dance, and they married on Aug. 1, 1969, in Woonsocket. They moved to Huron to build their lives together and had two children. 

Karen was a devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed the outdoors, including camping, boating and spending time with her family at their cabin on Lake Byron. 

In 2013, Karen and Merle moved to Spearfish to enjoy retirement and be closer to their children. They loved taking daily walks together, visiting with friends at coffee shops and truly loved live music and dancing. Karen and Merle especially enjoyed the Spearfish Canyon Acoustic Series held at the city park during the summer. She spent her last year living near her family in both Spearfish and Denver, Colo. 

Karen is survived by her husband, Merle Knight; sons, Chad (Mandy) Knight and Cory Knight (Robin Rozum); one granddaughter; sister, Cheryl (Ken) Pierce; and many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Verlyn Steichen.

Clinton Semmler

Rapid City

Clinton Wayne Semmler, 77, of Rapid City, passed away on Sept. 30, 2023.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, Oct. 5, at South Canyon Lutheran Church.

He was born Nov. 20, 1945, to Arnold and Altha (Brenner) Semmler in Parkston. He attended schools in Delmont, Armour and Wagner.

Clint entered the USAF in 1966 and served 25 years in various locations, including Iceland, Germany, Alaska, and New Jersey.  After retirement, he moved to Elkins, W.V., and worked as an associate warden at the Huttonsville Correctional Facility.

He married Sharon Lemons on Oct. 11, 2003, and moved to Rapid City. They were very active in the South Canyon Lutheran Church.  He loved to hunt and fish and belonged to the Rapid City Wood Carvers Club.

Clinton is survived by his wife, Sharon; daughter, Robin; son, Carter; brother, Mel (Lolly) Semmler; and sister, Sandra (Ron) Ruml of Letcher.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Norma Bietz, Margaret Freiderich, and Sylvia Kunz; and brothers-in-law, Harold Bietz, Wally Friederich, and Mike Lemons.
