Doris Hart

Mitchell

Doris Jean Hart, 93, of Mitchell, died Friday, April 21, 2023, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. 

Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 27, at Bittner Funeral Chapel. Burial was at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell. Visitation was Wednesday, April 26, at Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Doris Jean Morgan was born Oct. 26, 1929, to Virgil and Blanche (Ferguson) Morgan on a farm near Loomis. Doris attended Plano school for seven years, before the family moved south of Artesian where she attended Lyle Country School for one year. Doris then attended Artesian High School.

Doris was involved in music from a young age. She played the piano, organ, and accordion. She was also involved in forming a band that played for dances around the area, including house and barn dances. Doris also enjoyed dancing.

Doris married Douglas Hart on July 12, 1946, in Mitchell. To this union, five children were born. Doris took pride in being a stay-at-home mom. She raised a big garden for 43 years, canned fruits and vegetables, and worked in the field when needed. They farmed near Artesian until 1952, when they bought their farm near Howard. In 1990, they relocated off of the farm and into Mitchell.

Doris is survived by her four daughters, Sharon (Russ) Hendrix of Pierre, Carolyn (Dave) Schmit of Alexandria, Connie (Jon) Rentschler of Sioux Falls, and Charlotte (Bill) Charles of Winfred; one son, Terry (Mary) Hart of Madison; 21 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Kay Morgan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas, in January of 1996 after more than 49 years of marriage; her parents; granddaughter, Jodi Schmit; brother, Duane Morgan; and sister, Bethel (Les) Fawcett.

Kenneth J. Madsen, 82, of Huron, passed away on Thursday, April 27, 2023 at his home in Huron. 

His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, May 6, at American Lutheran Church with burial to follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron. Visitation, with his family present, will be from 4-6 p.m., on Friday, May 5, at Welter Funeral Home. 

Kenneth James Madsen was born on Feb. 2, 1941, to Henry and Violet (Krumvieda) Madsen in Plankinton. Ken attended school in Woonsocket. After his schooling, he farmed and milked cows, picked melons, and helped relatives and neighbors. 

In 1963, Ken went on a blind date with Esther Kopfmann, and within four months, they were married at the Woonsocket Lutheran Church on Nov. 3, 1963. To this union, three children were born.

Ken worked for the South Dakota Department of Transportation for over 33 years in highway maintenance. After retirement, he drove the school bus for many schools. He also enjoyed being a supervisor at the South Dakota State Fair. Ken was baptized Lutheran and was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Huron. He was a member of the Huron Senior Center and American Legion, holding many offices. He was also involved with the Huron Noon Lions Club. Ken enjoyed camping, hunting, and fishing. 

Ken is survived by his children, Vickie (Emmett) Harty of De Smet, James (Mary Jo) Madsen of Apple Valley, Minn., and Scott (Betsy) Madsen of Aberdeen; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; his siblings, Don (LaDonna) Madsen, Leroy Madsen, Larry (Judy) Madsen, and Betty Kelchen; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Esther; his grandson, Jared; siblings, Bobby (in infancy), Rose Ann Price, Janice Alderany, and Kathy Larson; and many aunts, uncles, and other loved ones. 

Rose Bies

Mitchell

Rose Marie Bies, 86, of Mitchell, died April 29, 2023, at her home under hospice care.  

Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, May 3, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell.  Visitation was held prior to the Mass and a luncheon followed the funeral Mass.  Burial was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Salem.

Rose was born on Jan. 25, 1937, in Salem, to Peter and Elsie (Wegener) Sandner.  She grew up in Salem, attending St. Mary’s Grade and High School.  On Aug. 31, 1955, she married Alan Bies at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Salem.

Rose was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.  

She is survived by her husband, Alan of Mitchell; five children, Debra (Dennis) Hibbard of Rapid City, Brian (Margaret) Bies of Rapid City, Peggy (Gary) Swenson of Woonsocket, Todd Bies of Papillion, Neb. and Michele (Mark) McCrory of Casa Grande, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Joyce Garry and Janet Hanisch; one brother, Larry Sandner; brothers-in-law, Bud Hanisch and Joe Scheidt; and one sister-in-law, Pat Sandner.

Rose was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Lavon Blinsmon, Elaine Scheidt, and Joan Smith; brother, Tony Sandner; and brothers-in-law, John Garry, Keith Smith and Roger Blinsmon.
