James Linn

Wessington Springs

James “Jim” Linn, 79, of Wessington Springs, died Thursday, April 6, 2023, at Weskota Manor in Wessington Springs. 

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 15, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Wessington Springs, with burial at Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, April 14, at the Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.

Jim Linn, son of Edwin and Arlene (Peters) Linn, was born Oct. 23, 1943, in Wessington Springs. He grew up in Wessington Springs and graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1961. After his schooling, Jim drove milk truck and also helped his father with his trucking business.

He was united in marriage with Dee Monteith on Nov. 19, 1969, and the couple made their home in Lead. While in Lead, Jim was employed at Homestake Gold Mine. They later moved to Virgil, where he was employed at the local elevator. In 1977, they moved to Lane and began driving truck.

In 2005, Jim was united in marriage with Anita (Gross) Westra. He then moved to Tea to be closer to his mother. He continued to drive truck until he suffered his second stroke in 2020. He moved to Mitchell in the spring of 2021 and resided at Edgewood. In December of 2022, he moved to Weskota Manor in Wessington Springs.

He enjoyed raising horses, playing cards and dancing, but will always be remembered for his love for homemade ice cream.

Jim is survived by his children, Kim (Ryan) Thompson of Fargo, N.D., James (Terra) Linn of Lane, Tim (Anna) Linn of Audubon, Minn., and Shannon (Rita) Linn of Letcher; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his mother, Arlene Acker of Tea; his siblings, Jean (Steve) Selchert of Sioux Falls, Larry (Marlys) Linn of Billings, Mont., Joyce (Paul) Schultz of Tea, and Paula (Robert) Migliore of Friendswood, Texas; a sister-in-law, Mary Linn of Emery; a special friend, Jan Endres of Watertown; and numerous nieces and nephews.  

He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, Ronnie Linn; and a nephew, Jeff Selchert.

Eugene Prins

Woonsocket

Eugene “Beaner” LaVerne Prins, 45, died on March 26, 2020.

A memorial celebration of life for Eugene will be held at the Woonsocket Community Center on Friday, April 28, 2023, at 2 p.m., for sharing stories and memories of Eugene with family and friends. A private burial will be held at a later date. 

Eugene was born on May 14, 1974, at Huron Regional Medical Center in Huron to Patricia (Prins) Scholtes.

He lived in Woonsocket until the age of four when the family moved to Wilmont, Minn., where he resided until 1992. He attended the Worthington Schools until grade 12 when he moved back to South Dakota at the age of 18. 

Eugene was a hard worker his whole life. His first job was washing dishes at different restaurants in Worthington. Upon returning to South Dakota, he went to work for Duke’s Tree Service for a few years. In 1996, he started at the Artesian Honey Farm until 2000. It was a job that he liked and went back to help out when they needed him. He worked construction for Jeff Hotchkiss and Meyers Roofing before starting at L.S.I., where he worked from Jan. 4, 2001, to May 24, 2007.

He married Jennifer Gibson on Feb. 15, 2008, and moved to Chicago for a short time. On his return, he returned to work at Jack Links on May 30, 2008, until his death on March 26, 2020.

Eugene was a man of great humor and will be missed by many. He loved spending time with family and friends and his constant companion, Shadow.

Eugene is survived by his mother, Pat Scholtes; the father figure in his life, Jeff Hotchkiss; two brothers, Tim Prins and Colton Hotchkiss; sister, Becca Prins; three bonus sisters, Amy Hotchkiss, Arynne Williams and Angie Reichenberg; aunt, Sue Harrington; special cousin, Sara Hinna; one nephew; two nieces; and his best friend, Shadow.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Connie Prins and Gerry and Arlene Hotchkiss; uncle, Tom Harrington; and aunt, Peggy Prins.

Kathryn Fouberg

Sioux Falls

Kathryn Fouberg, 76, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Letcher, died Thursday, March 30, 2023, at her home in Sioux Falls. 

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 7, at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a visitation one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be at Eventide Cemetery in Woonsocket. Arrangements are by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Kathryn M. (Higgins) Fouberg was born on March 23, 1947, to John and Catherine (MacNeill) Higgins in Boston, Mass.

She was united in marriage to Ronald Fouberg in Phoenix, Ariz., on Aug. 28, 1965. The couple made their home in Phoenix, and Fouberg was employed with Mt. Bell and the Arizona State Hospital. Kathye was vice president for two years at Litchfield Montessori School, Litchfield Park, Ariz., and implemented the BlackBird Vision eye testing on preschoolers. In 1980, they moved their family to Sheridan, Wyo., and Kathye was office manager for Auto Electric Service. In 1984, they moved their family to Letcher, and Fouberg served four terms as mayor. While living in South Dakota, Fouberg worked for the Davison County Sheriff’s Office in Mitchell. She was involved with several different organizations, Holy Spirit Church and Altar Society, Professional Business & Women’s Clubs of Phoenix, Ariz., and Wyoming; Cuff & Stuff Red Hat Society, Mitchell Area Law Enforcement, and Toys for Tots of Mitchell; American Legion Auxiliary of Letcher; and the “S.D. Gal Pals” and S.D. Patriot Guards.

Kathye is survived by her daughter, Roxane Fouberg (Rachel) of Sioux Falls; sisters, Mary Louise (James) Miller of Marlow, Okla., Kimberely (Gar) Maurer of Sheridan, Wyo., and Tracey Andrews of Arizona; brother, Rob Higgins; sister-in-law, Sharon McGovern of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.

Kathye was preceded in death by her husband, Ron; an infant son, John Russel; her parents; one brother; one sister; in-laws; and brother-in-law.
