Janet Paula Wolter-Montgomery, 71, of Vermillion, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2023, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 20, at the Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion, with burial to follow in the Bluffview Cemetery in Vermillion.

Janet Wolter was born Aug. 1, 1951, in Mitchell, and was the third of eight children born to John and Marian (Duncan) Wolter of Woonsocket. She attended St. Joseph Parochial School and graduated from Woonsocket High School in 1970. Jan continued her education at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, and after graduation, she enlisted in the United States Air Force. Major Janet P. Wolter retired after 20 years. Returning to Vermillion, she met and later married Dave Montgomery. They moved to Danbury, Wis., where they owned and operated Dufour’s Campground.

She is survived by her husband, David of Vermillion; sisters, Rochel Nelson and Cortney Wolter of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., Gwen Nelson of Chico, Calif., Wanda Wolter of Fort Worth, Texas, and Lynda Baysinger of Woonsocket; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Marian, and siblings, Michele Michaels and Ed Wolter.

Kathy Uecker

Council Bluffs, Iowa

Kathleen “Kathy” Marie (Burnison) Uecker, 76, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2023.

A private Celebration of Life for Kathleen Uecker will be held at Westlawn-Hillcrest, Omaha, Neb. Family will direct memorials. 

She was born on Aug. 12, 1946, in Mitchell. After graduating from Woonsocket High School, Kathy moved to Omaha, Neb. to attend Business School. This is where she met her husband of 53 years, Doug Uecker. Through this union, they raised three daughters. Initially, Kathy was a stay-at-home mother before working at Saint Joseph Hospital as a key-punch operator/accounts payable clerk until her retirement.

Kathy enjoyed doing crafts and sewing projects, gardening, baking, and decorating her home to make it a welcoming place.

Kathy is survived by her daughters, Dawn (Vincent) Tangeman of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Debra (Bill) Robinson of Oakland, Iowa and Dana (Brent) Van Scoy of Council Bluffs, Iowa; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; her sister, LeeAnn Pack of Hillsboro, Ore.; brother-in-law, Lee (Marsha) Uecker of Texas; and nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Uecker; parents, Alfred and Lena (Brandenburg) Kringen; and brother, Robert Burnison.

Marlene Howard

Woonsocket

Marlene R. Howard, 81, of Woonsocket, passed away at her home on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023. 

Funeral Mass services were on Tuesday, Jan. 31, in St. Wilfrid Catholic Church, Woonsocket. Burial was in the church cemetery. Visitations were on Monday, Jan. 30, at the church with a prayer service and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Marlene Rae Higgins was born on June 7, 1941, to Leo and Gladys (Roti) Higgins. She was the third of seven children. She attended Heller and Wahl Country School, then graduated from Alpena High School in 1959. She went on to attend Presentation College in Aberdeen.

Marlene married Patrick L. Howard on Nov. 11, 1961, raising six children during their sixty-year marriage.

Marlene was an active member of the St. Wilfrid Church and 60-year member of Catholic Daughters of America. As a Sanborn County 4-H leader, Marlene shared her many talents of ceramics, sewing, and arts and crafts.  Later in life, she enjoyed participating in all her quilting clubs, as well as assisting in the creation of prayer quilts. Marlene enjoyed working at Hegg Insurance for many years. She received the Hometown Hero award from the Modern Woodmen Association in 2019.

Marlene is survived by her children, Julie (Robert) Thomson, James (Lori) Howard, Jeffrey (Carrie) Howard, and Jason (Torria) Howard; four grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Janice Stange, Ilene Breakie, and Diane (Skip) Larson; sisters-in-law, LeElda Higgins and Patricia Higgins; brother-in-law, Charlie Knigge; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick; two sons, Rodney Francis and Joseph Louis; one grandson, John Michael Thomson; parents, Leo and Gladys Higgins; in-laws, Francis and Edith Howard; brothers, Darrell Higgins and Duane Higgins; sister, Myrna Knigge; and brothers-in-law, Donald Stange and Fred Breakie.
