Woonsocket

Violet “Lodema” (Wilson)  Block, 88, of Woonsocket, passed away on Friday, Aug. 26, 2022, at Prairie View Healthcare Center in Woonsocket. 

Funeral services were Tuesday, Aug. 30, at Spirit of Faith Lutheran-Methodist Church, Woonsocket. Visitation with a prayer service was on Monday at the church. Burial was at St. Wilfrid Cemetery. Pastor John Anderson officiated. Arrangements were by Basham Funeral Service, Woonsocket.

Lodema was born to  Walter Elza and Mae Opal (Pharis) Wilson in Longdale, Okla., on June 25, 1934. She grew up in Colorado. 

In 1953, she married Ambrose “Bud” Block, and from this marriage came eight kids. 

Lodema’s pride and joy was running a daycare in Woonsocket for many years, which included several of her grandkids. She loved doing crossword puzzles, reading and country music. In her younger years, she loved camping and fishing with Bud and family members. She loved the Atlanta Braves.

She is survived by all eight of her kids, Gary (Tara) Block of Custer, Belinda (Ted Newell) Block of Sioux Falls, Tena Block (Pat Ziegler) of Dimock, Renee (Trent “Budda”) Foos of Woonsocket, Randy Block of Red Oak, Iowa, Carla Block of Houston, Texas, Val (Larry) Houlihan of Billings, Mont., and Greg (Amanda) Block of Beaufort, S.C.;  31 grandkids, 70 great-grandkids, and three great-great-grandkids; her brothers, Elza (Marsha) Wilson of Colorado and Melford (Zella) Wilson of Colorado; and her many daycare kids she had over the years. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud; her parents; her brother, Carl; and her sister, Helen; and two great-grandchildren, Brice and Kylee. 

Doris E. Cordell, 89, of Huron, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 21, 2022, at Prairie View Healthcare Center in Woonsocket. 

Her Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, Aug. 30, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. The burial followed at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron. Her visitation with a scripture service was on Monday, Aug. 29, at Welter Funeral Home in Huron.

Doris Evelyn Friman was born to Elda O. and Gladys (Benson) Friman in Hurley on Aug. 4, 1933. She was raised on a farm with her 15 siblings near Hurley. Growing up, she helped with milking cows, feeding their Chester White pigs, stacking hay, looking out for snakes and working in the garden.

Doris married Victor J. Cordell in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Oct. 4, 1963. The couple lived in Nebraska, Minnesota and Michigan before moving to Huron in the early 1980s. Doris was a homemaker for her children. She enjoyed flower gardening and collecting pigs and crystal figurines. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish and a lifelong member of the Moose Lodge. Doris also enjoyed traveling throughout the Midwest watching Victor’s band perform.

Doris is survived by her children, Nancy Kannenberg and Peggy Luckett, both of Huron; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild on the way; four sisters, Audrey (George) Sample of Flandreau, Margaret E. Adel of White, Eleanor Bjerkaas of Yankton, and Genette Rusk of Flandreau; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Mary Hall.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Doug Cordell; two granddaughters, Skyla and Kristy Luckett; three brothers and seven sisters.

Donald Hight

Sioux Falls

Donald Dean Hight, 68, passed away on Aug. 27, 2022, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls surrounded by his family after struggling with early onset Alzheimer’s for over 10 years.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1, at First Reformed Church in Sioux Falls. Visitation with family present will begin at 1 p.m. at the church. Arrangements are by the Heritage Funeral Home of Sioux Falls.

Don was born May 5, 1954, in Chamberlain to Willard and Gladys (Scales) Hight.  He was baptized at the Methodist Church and confirmed at the Friedens Reformed Church in Tripp.

While in high school, Don worked at AMPI in Parkston, making cheese and picking up milk from the farmers instead of being able to play sports. He graduated from Parkston High School in 1974.

Don met the love of his life while on a double date, each with a different person, while picking Cindy up from her home place. Don married Cindy on June 29, 1975, in the Friedens Reform Church in Tripp.

After they were married, they moved to Mitchell before moving to Freeman. While at Freeman, Don worked for Mehlhaff Manufacturing. They then moved to Tyndall. While living in Tyndall, Don worked at Portec Manufacturing in Yankton. Next, they moved to Tripp. Don opened his own gas and car repair shop called Don’s Standard Service.

Don and Cindy then moved to a farm outside of Kaylor. During that time, he worked at JCPenney in the men’s department before they moved to Scotland, where they lived for 26 years. While in Scotland, Don worked as head maintenance for the Scotland nursing home for fifteen years, after which he took a job at the Poet Ethanol Plant for 10 years. Sometime after, Don developed dementia and early onset Alzheimer’s, and Don and Cindy moved to Sioux Falls.

Don was a devoted son, husband, father, and grandfather. He spent his years attending his children’s and grandchildren’s academic and athletic events. Don also coached Special Olympics, high school football, flag football, and youth basketball. He was a volunteer firefighter for the Tripp and Scotland Fire Departments.  Don enjoyed doing house projects, watching movies, playing cards, eating ice cream, making the “duck noise” to make his family laugh, and having a couple of beers with his friends and family. 

Don is survived by his wife of 47 years, Cindy Hight; his three children, Toby Hight of Sioux Falls, Tricia (Arin) Boschee of Woonsocket, and Tucker (Micaela) Hight of Wayne, Neb.; six grandchildren; nine siblings, Sonia (Harlen) Schelske of Reliance, Jim (Vondalee) Hight of Prineville, Ore., Donna (Tom) Graham of Davis, Okla., Pat (Greg) Kogel of Mitchell, Jerry (Helen) Hight of Gillette, Wyo., twin brother Ronald (Candy) Hight of Arena, Wis., Howard (Kathy) Hight of Mitchell, Barb (Dick) Roxbury of Coloma, Wis., and Alice (Steve) Mathey of Madison; numerous nieces and nephews; and Daisy, his beloved dog.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, and his three sisters, Brenda Mae Hight, Glenda Zangle, and Jackie Hight.
