On Tuesday, Jan. 9, the SCW Blackhawks basketball teams traveled to Kimball for a doubleheader against the Kimball/White Lake (KWL) WiLdKats. The varsity ladies took control once again and improved their record to 6-2 on the season, while the varsity boys gave the crowd another nail biter that did not end in the Blackhawks’ favor.

The games started with the girls’ junior varsity handling things quite easily against the younger KWL ladies with a final score of 31-15, SCW.

The JV boys played next and added another victory to their undefeated record with a 30-23 score over the younger WiLdKats.

The varsity girls were up next. The Lady Blackhawks started slow, but then took off in the second quarter and never looked back in the 58-27 win over the WiLdKats.

The varsity boys ended the night with another close game that came down to the last seconds. The Blackhawks worked hard to the end but couldn’t come out on top and finished with their fifth loss for the season with a final score of 45-47, KWL.

Of the five losses for the Blackhawks this season so far, three of them have been within three points and another within six. What they are doing is working, it just comes down to finishing. There is a lot of season left, so things should continue to improve. The 281 Conference Tournament started for the girls on Friday, Jan. 12, and the Lady Blackhawks brought home a 50-35 win over Wolsey-Wessington to advance to the semi-finals. Their second-round game was on Tuesday against Iroquois/Lake Preston. The boys’ games got postponed from Saturday to Monday, where SCW played Hitchcock-Tulare in their first round and broke their losing streak, defeating the Patriots, 64-39. SCW boys defeat WS, JVC to win

On Saturday, Jan. 6, the girls’ and boys’ junior high basketball teams traveled to Huron to participate in the James Valley Christian tournament. The SCW girls took third place with a record of 1-1 in the tournament, and the SCW boys placed first with a 2-0 record, defeating Wessington Springs and James Valley Christian.

The girls kicked off the morning of games. The young Lady Blackhawks played hard in a close matchup with Wessington Springs but came up short losing their first game with a score 18-19. In their second game, the Lady Blackhawks played the Mitchell Christian Eagles. They got off to an early lead and never looked back, defeating the Eagles 39-10.

The SCW boys’ first game of the tournament was against Wessington Springs. The boys hit the court running and jumped off to a quick lead that they never gave up, winning with a final score of 36 SCW, 15 WS. The win brought them up against the James Valley Christian Vikings to determine the tournament’s winner. Once again, the Blackhawk boys started the game with the lead that expanded to 13 points by half time. The young JVC boys tried to make a comeback in the second half, but the SCW boys held them off to win the game and the tournament with a final score, 35-34.

The SCW Blackhawks basketball teams had their first games for 2024 against the Bridgewater-Emery (B-E) Huskies in a doubleheader played in Emery on Tuesday, Jan. 2. They started the night with a C game for both the boys and the girls, with both teams bringing home a win. The C-team girls won 25-20.

The JV girls were up next, and the SCW young ladies continued their winning streak with a 39-21 win over the B-E Huskies. .

The JV boys were also successful with their game on Tuesday dominating the JV Huskies 34-22.

The varsity girls made it a clean sweep for the Lady Blackhawks winning their game against the Huskies 53-23.

The SCW varsity boys worked hard to the very end, once again, but couldn’t pull out the win and suffered a tough 49-52 loss to B-E.

On Thursday, Jan. 4, the Blackhawks hosted the Howard Tigers in Forestburg for their second doubleheader of the week. The JV girls started the competition with a close score of 17-22 for their first loss of the season.

The JV boys continued down the winning trail with a 23-22 win over the JV Tigers.

The SCW Lady Blackhawks varsity squad lost a tough battle with a final score of 51-55 against a very good Howard Tigers team.

The final game of the night found the varsity Blackhawks up against an experienced Howard team. After a second quarter where SCW was outscored 5-26, the Blackhawks could not get themselves out of that hole in the second half and ended with a 40-68 loss to the Tigers.

The varsity ladies started this week with a 5-2 record, and the boys fall to 3-4 for the season thus far. Both teams traveled to Kimball for a doubleheader against the KWL WiLdKats on Tuesday, Jan. 9, followed by the 281 Tournaments starting with the girls on Friday, Jan. 12 and the boys on Saturday, Jan. 13.
