The Woonsocket Community Library will host a Summer Reading Program for Youth, “Dig Into Reading” from June 10 to July 19.
Students in the elementary that are taking Accelerated Reader tests may continue to do so over the summer. Their points will add to their totals towards the “Every Reader is a Star Program.”
To complete the program and be eligible for a certificate and prizes, youth entering preschool, kindergarten amd grades one and two will be required to read a minimum of 200 pages; grades three and four, 350 pages; grades five and six, 450 pages; and grades seven and eight, 600 pages. Parents and older siblings are encouraged to read to the younger children.
Youth reading more than the minimum number of pages will be eligible for additional prizes. Books read must be checked out on June 10 or later if the pages are to be counted towards the program. Since this is a library program, we request that 90 percent of the books read be checked out from the library.
Younger children will need someone to assist them in completing the reading logs. If you cannot be with your child when they check books in and out from the library, please write the names of the books they have read and the number of pages on a blank sheet of paper and send it with your child so it can be stapled to their log. You can choose to keep a copy of pages read and turn them into the library by July 19.
A party date will be set at a later time. Youth that complete the program will be asked to bring a solid color T-shirt to the party and an iron-on decal will be placed on the front of the shirt.
The South Dakota State Fair will again offer free gate admission tickets to the youth that meet the qualifications. Youth entering pre-school and kindergarten need to read (or be read to) at least 300 pages; grades one and two, 400 pages; grades three and four, 500 pages; grades five and six, 800 pages; grades seven and eight, 1,200 pages; and grades nine through 12, 1,500 pages.
