Sanborn Central senior Jessica Schmit is the recipient of the $750 Roger Erickson Memorial Scholarship from the James River Gobblers Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. She received her award recently at their banquet held at the Highland Conference Center in Mitchell.
The Federation and the local James River Chapter supports conservation of wildlife and encourages youth hunting. The scholarship is to be used for post-high school education in a college or technical institution.
The essay topic was an explanation of why hunting is important to families and their heritage with an emphasis on what hunting and conservation has taught the essay participant.
Jessica plans to attend Dakota State University at Madison in the fall majoring in math education. She is the daughter of Bob and Brenda Schmit of Artesian.
