Bernita Hinker, 90, Forestburg, died Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016, at Avera Brady Health in Mitchell.
Funeral services were 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 3, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Mitchell. Burial was in St. Wilfrid Catholic Cemetery, Woonsocket. Visitation was Sunday afternoon, Oct. 2, with a prayer service the Bittner Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.
Bernita LaBreche Hinker was born June 23, 1926, in Mitchell, to Guy and Edna (Rubert) LaBreche. She graduated from Forestburg High School in 1944.
On July 25, 1944, she married William Hinker at St. Wilfrid’s Catholic Church in Woonsocket. To this union eight children were born. They farmed in Sanborn County all of their life. They retired to Mitchell in 2013 and were residents of Avera Brady Health and Rehab.
Bernita was a member of Silver Creek Township Board, Forestburg Improvement Association, Election Board, St. Francis Circle, Sanborn County Extension Club and supporter of Sanborn County 4-H. She was also a member of St. Wilfrid’s Catholic Church.
Bernita will be remembered for helping raise many acres of melons and maintaining the melon stands. She loved sewing and crafts. She worked at Ruskin Park and also took the Forestburg senior class on skip day to the Black Hills. She helped whip up a ton of potato salad. She always loved having chickens and fresh eggs.
Grateful for sharing her life are her five children, Melanie (David) Blevins, Denver, Colo., Leonard (Nancy) Hinker, Fedora, Cathy (James) Hegg, Huron, Roger (Pat) Hinker, Forestburg, and Mark (Carol) Hinker, Mitchell; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one sister-in-law, Marie Rankin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Edna LaBreche; husband William; two sons, Anthony and Lee; and one daughter, Beverly.
