Woman receives probation for grand theft against City of Letcher

Charges of grand theft against the City of Letcher resulted in probation and a $300 fine in Sanborn County Court recently.
Mary Ackman, 62, of Letcher, received a suspended imposition of sentence after pleading guilty to grand theft of at least $5,000, but less than $100,000 against the City of Letcher. The theft occurred between 2011 and 2015, while Ackman was serving as finance officer for Letcher.
Judge Jon Erickson granted the suspended imposition in Sanborn County Court Aug. 1, with terms to include the fine and 18 months probation.
Grand theft in the amount charged is a Class 4 felony.
A suspended imposition of sentence (SIS) seals a criminal conviction to the public, upon completion of terms and conditions ruled by a judge. Only one suspended imposition of sentence can be received in a lifetime, and one cannot be granted if the defendant has any prior felony convictions. The court reserves the right to amend any or all of the terms in the SIS order at any time during the probationary period.
