Wayne Steichen honored for service in WWII

On Jan. 19, the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs honored Wayne Steichen with the presentation of a commemorative World War II medal.

Wayne served in the United States Navy from 1944–1946. He was deployed on a Landing Craft Support (LCS) in the South Pacific as a radioman.  The convoy of ships landed on the island of Okinawa, anchored in the bay of Shanghai, China, and traversed the coastline of Japan.

Pictured is David Sorenson, Minnehaha County Veteran’s Service Officer, and Wayne Steichen.
