Gene DeVries

Plankinton

Gene DeVries, 87, of Cavour, died on Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2021, at Prairie View Healthcare Center in Woonsocket from cancer.

His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18, at Welter Funeral Home in Huron, with burial at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation, with his family present, will be from 4-6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 17, at Welter Funeral Home.

Gene DeVries was born Norval Gene DeVries to Henry and Grace (Gaughran) DeVries on Sept. 6, 1934, in Huron. As a child, his family lived south of the Cavour area near Pearl Creek, later moving to the place where Gene lived and farmed with his dad. Gene graduated from Huron High School.

On Oct. 5, 1957, he married Dorace Krutzfeldt, and they made their home on the farm next to his parents where they resided all their lives. Gene served on several boards and was a member of NFO, SD Wheat Growers, Elks and Custer Township Board.

Gene’s interests were farming, cattle, and his grandkids. He also loved a good auction.

Gene is survived by his daughters, Vicki Vining (Robert Peterson) of Fedora, Nikki Baatz of Lester, Iowa, and Tanya (Jeneva Maneval) DeVries of Huron; son, Jeff (Kimberly) DeVries of Cavour; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; his brother, Hubert (Eloise) DeVries; his sisters, Sharon (Bill) Carter and Janice Marone; and sisters-in-law, Betty Krutzfeldt and Dorene Eckmann.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorace DeVries in 2014; daughters, Michelle DeVries and infant Melissa DeVries; sons-in-law, Keith Vining and Robert Baatz; brothers-in-law, Ernie Marone, Ervin Krutzfeldt and Kenneth Eckmann.

PHYLLIS ARHART

Sioux Falls

Phyllis Arhart, 85, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Woonsocket, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2021, at Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls. 

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 13, at First United Methodist Church in Mitchell. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery in Lane. Arrangements were by Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Phyllis Arlene Arhart was born Jan. 21, 1936, in Wessington Springs to Russell and Elsie (Nelson) Salmen. The family first resided north of White Lake, but in 1944 moved to the current Salmen family farm east of Wessington Springs. She was baptized into the Christian faith on June 1, 1936, at Underwood Methodist Church north of White Lake. She attended Griffith School through sixth grade, and then attended Lane High School, graduating in 1954.

After high school, Phyllis attended nurses training at the former Methodist Hospital in Mitchell and graduated as a registered nurse in 1957. She worked in surgery, and became a nurse anesthetist at Sioux Valley in Sioux Falls. She also continued to work night shifts at the Methodist hospital in Mitchell. In her later years, she worked at both the Wessington Springs and Miller hospitals.

On Nov. 25, 1960, Phyllis married LeRoy Arhart and moved six miles south of Alpena. Together they adopted Rodney LeRoy in 1966 and Susan Beth in 1968.

Phyllis was involved in many activities including gardening (vegetables and flowers), bird watching (and shooting black birds), camping, and sewing. She made quilts and other clothing items. She loved being with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared her life are her son, Rodney of Sioux Falls; daughter, Susan Anderson of Fergus Falls, Minn.; two grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Beverly Salmen.

She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy; grandson, Briggs Anderson; parents, Russell and Elsie; and brother, Wayne Salmen.

Jason Nurnberg

Forestburg

Jason E. Nurnberg, 47, of Forestburg, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2021, at the Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. 

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 18, at the Sanborn County 4-H Building in Forestburg. Burial will follow at Silver Creek Cemetery, rural Forestburg. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 17, at the Sanborn County 4-H Building with a prayer service at 8 p.m.

Jason Ernest Nurnberg was born on March 26, 1974, in Mitchell, to Doug and Elma (Hunter) Nurnberg. He was raised in the Forestburg area where he attended school through the first grade before attending school in Artesian where he graduated in 1992. Following high school, Jason attended Southwestern Technical College in Granite Falls, Minn. where he earned a degree in Robotics and Flexible Automation in 1994.

Jason began his working career shearing sheep and hoeing melons. He worked as a Maintenance/Automation Technician at several companies including Falcon Plastics, Twin City Die Castings, Hendrickson, and Graphic Packaging in Mitchell where he was employed at the time of his death.

He thoroughly enjoyed music; he was an avid guitar player and loved collecting Gibson guitars. For several years, he was a member of Scotty and the Melonheads which consisted of his brothers and a close friend. Jason’s love for the outdoors was infinite. His family and friends share countless memories hunting, fishing, and farming with him. He was a patient man who never had a lot to say, an excellent cook, and his smile and laugh were contagious. 

He was a member of the Forestburg Lutheran Church.

Jason is survived by his mother, Elma of Forestburg; his three brothers, Russ (Kathy) Nurnberg of Watertown, Clint (Jeniffer) Nurnberg of Mitchell, and Scott Nurnberg of Forestburg; his nieces and nephews; one great-niece; two great-nephews; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Doug; and one nephew, Blake.
