National 4-H Week kicked off to a good start with a Fun Horse Show at the 4-H Grounds in Forestburg on Sunday, Oct. 4. The day started out with the annual horse safety training for the 4-Hers by Eric Kobernusz of Mt. Vernon where they learned basic horse safety skills.

The judge for the day was Jennifer Martinez of Ethan.  The top six finishers in each event of beginner, junior and senior were awarded ribbons.  Points were totaled and Grand Champion and Reserve Champion ribbons and prizes were awarded to overall beginner, junior and senior participants.  This event is sponsored by Sanborn and Jerauld/Buffalo Counties.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Melon Fest in Forestburg was conducted differently. In order to try to keep a social distance and still have an enjoyable event, the committee organized what they called the COVID Cruise. Cars of all types, along with a few motorcycles, lined up in Forestburg and then traveled together to Woonsocket, then to Letcher, and then back to Forestburg. They were led by fire trucks from the Woonsocket, Artesian and Letcher Fire Departments.
In addition to the parade of cars to celebrate, they collected food and money for the Sanborn County Food Pantry. They also had door prizes that were given away once the cruise was over and everyone was back in Forestburg. They sold raffle tickets for other prizes and en-joyed each other’s company in small groups to end the evening of fun. The weather worked out perfectly, and participation was better than expected. They will now work on plans for next year’s festival, which everyone hopes will be closer to the events they have had in the past.

The past weekend found Mason Moody and Madi Moody both competing at the Eastern Dakota 4-H Rodeo in Watertown. The Moodys have been busy already competing and preparing for competition, as their mother, Tracy, informed the Journal that Mason actually qualified and competed in the State High School Rodeo Finals earlier; however, this is their first 4-H rodeo competition for this year.

Their results for the rodeo in Watertown over the weekend are, on Saturday, Mason placed second in team roping. On Sunday, Mason placed fifth in team roping, and Madi placed second in goat tying, third in pole bending and seventh in barrel racing.

According to Tracy, it is very exciting to have Madi able to compete in the goat tying competition again after she had to sit out last year due to a knee injury. Also, stay tuned for future results as the Moodys continue to compete this summer, and Mason will start bull riding next week.

Other local kids who also participated in the Eastern Dakota 4-H Rodeo in Watertown were Hudson Fouberg, Ramsey Fouberg, Layton Zoss and Landree Zoss, all from Sanborn Central and Tanner Christian from Woonsocket. No placings were reported for these students, but Hudson Fouberg was voted Miss Congeniality in the Jr. Queen Contest for the weekend’s event.
